Well we have had a very restful day today and that's been very welcomed. Sadly the weather hasn't been the best.. Raining intermittently and generally overcast. It was very hot overnight so was a nice relief. Still very warm air, but we have had a wet tail dozens of times today! However we've still managed to get out and about!. You walk out the back gate of the caravan park and the beach is just through the trees. The tide was incredibly high this morning so there was no visible sand on the whole 4 mile beach! Amazing site! Once the tide went out though I managed a beautiful ocean swim in the region of the stinger net! The water is sooo warm! It started pouring while I was swimming! Its pretty wild. I had a ... read more

Yet another HUGE driving day today. We couldn't leave Bowen at stupid o'clock because I had left the laundry in the dryer and they locked the laundry. It didn't open till 6.30. Soon after though we said goodbye to this seriously beautiful place. From here on it was pretty much, drive, drive and drive a bit more. We passed through some beautiful scenery and towns though. The famous Burdekin river, Townsville ( a really huge city, surrounded by army barracks) Tully and Ingham. I was always trying to get photos along the journey out of the window, but it never does the scenery justice. Because we were trying to make up time, it wasn't possible to stop much. Maybe another time! We did have lunch in a beautiful town called Cardwell. It was on the ocean ... read more

Rose at 5:30 this morning for a sunrise walk on the 4 Mile beach, right behind the Temple Spa Hotel. After breakfast back on the coach for a trip to the Daintree Rain Forest, the oldest documented rain forest in the world. Passed field after field of sugar cane. Australia is a big exporter of sugar cane, no high fructose corn syrup here. Bet my daughter and family would love that. Went to a private tour, owner has been there over 25 years and they have 140 acres or more. Her place has both tropical and semi- tropical areas. Louise, our guide, said she wanted to see a cassowary, one of the oldest flightless birds. The one who found us was about 5 ft tall, a male, with a hollow hard crest on his head, a ... read more

Last couple of days in Port Douglas. Monday was spent on Four Mile Beach soaking up the rays and dipping in the ocean inside the stinger net. The net encloses an area about the size of half a football pitch and is wound in and out by the lifeguard to match the tide. Sea temperature was 29 in the shade temperature was 32 and in the sun very hot! Tuesday was spent around the pool, mostly in the shade, and although the pool is saltwater it felt far more refreshing than the sea. Tomorrow, Wednesday, we leave Port Douglas at 9am and travel to Cairns for the flight to Hong Kong. We should reach our hotel in Kowloon about 12 hours later. This is the one with the roof top swimming pool. Should be fun. Next ... read more

Today was a day at the zoo, australian animals only. We participated in a number of tours and presentaions and got to stroke a small crocodile. It felt just like a pair of shoes. Highlight of the day was watching a joey leave its mother's pouch probably for the first time and doing an excellent bambi impersonation, falling over every time it tried to take a step. The crocodiles both fresh water and esturian were impressive, from a distance. Back late afternoon for our customary dip in the pool. We have just been advised that our trip to the Barrier Reef has been reorganised to tomorrow, so off we go insearch of Nemo.... read more

A good flight to Cairns with a magnificent sunset at 33000 feet. We were met at the airport and taken to the hotel in Port Douglas, about an hour away. The road followed the coast and was quite windy, however we did not see much as it was pitch black so we will have to wait for the return trip for the scenery. As we were arriving late we had been given a code to enter in the key safe to get access to our room. On the way to the room we met a couple who came from Titchfield, just a couple of miles from home, how odd is that. The room turned out to be a fully equipped apartment and we subsequently learnt that we had been given an upgrade again, what luck. After ... read more

It was a very Queensland welcome - we landed in Cairns, came off the plane and there was a cane toad on the air bridge. It's the first one I've seen, but as to whether I can consider it in its natural habitat, usually one of my criteria, is another thing again. After all, Cairns airport is hardly the great outdoors! The weekend in Port Douglas had been booked some time ago. It was the shoulder season so whether the weather would cooperate was to be another matter. Either way I was confident that it would still be warm at least. I admit though, the prospect of a cyclone hadn't crossed my mind. I was checking the weather forecast at least a week out. It didn't look promising, solid rain from Thursday - Tuesday. But then ... read more

Blue skies and sunny days make me want to be out doors but the Cairns summers can be unbearable. "thank God for air con, we just stay indoors" so many people say to me. The idea of locking myself in on a gorgeous day just seems so bizarre to me... But something that I'm growing accustomed to after 7 years in Far North Queensland. However, this particular weekend, I had that urge to be out enjoying the great outdoors. So I jumped on Wotif to see if there were any bargains for any of our favourite close areas- Palm Cove, Atherton Tablelands or Port Douglas. A spontaneous weekend by a pool or a reprieve from the humidity on the Tablelands was getting me excited... I found a "Mystery Deal" in Port for $132. After a little ... read more

The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas is spectacular, it's a definite Morgan route. The road follows the coast and you can see the bluest seas with the whitest sand and palm trees on the beach, all very tropical and beautiful. On the other side of the road you have the rainforest coming right down to the beach so add in the greenest lushest foliage and put them together, it makes an incredible backdrop. The scenery and beaches are most definitely much much more awesome than anywhere else on the Australian coast that we have seen. We have had the day in the rainforest. It was about 50 min drive south of Port Douglas and we were booked in for 10am, thought we would try and get there before the heat of the day kicked in. ... read more

The first booking that was made for this whole 10 week trip was the entry into The Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival. This was done way back in january. Once that was done we could move on and plan routes, book flights and so on. Throughout our summer in Haute Provence, this had been our motivator to get out and run, which we did several times every week. As it turned out the Provençal landscape was perfect preparation for the marathon run, lots of hills and rocks, at that point though I hadn't sussed the fine points of the actual race route, so the similarity was lost on me. Once back in England we had continued to run, on the flat of course, that being the nature of the Selsey coastline. So all good in terms ... read more
