So now having seen so many of the Australian icons, such as the Great Barrier Reef and Fraser Island along with all the beautiful sandy beaches up and down the coast, we were now headed towards one of the other things that Australia is well known for… the endless flat lands of red soil, scorching heat and scrub land, known affectionately as ‘the outback’. Only a couple of weeks ago we had decided that we would attempt to make it across half the continent to the northern capital of Darwin. This consisted of a distance from Townsville of approximately 2500 kms, which took us through only one city (Mount Isa) and one junction (Three Ways). Our first day involved us doing a small drive of 850 kms from Townsville to Mount Isa along some of the ... read more

Our first stop on the road inland was in Atherton which seemed a pleasant town, then we began to get more remote and we visited Mt Hypipamee crator, which is, yep a crater. The pretty Milla Milla waterfall was our stop for lunch, before we made our way to a brilliant free camping group in the town of Ravenshoe. It was only around this time that we realised that free camping groups are prolific throughout Australia, especially away from the touristy East Coast. The site in Ravenshoe is on a fantastic old railway yard, still with railway paraphernalia scattered around the grounds, on a weekend the campers (mostly Grey Nomads) are moved on as a steam train still operates for tourism purposes. We were welcomed in by the nomads, and enjoyed our brief stay in Ravenshoe. ... read more

I took a 12 hour bus from Townsville to the mining town of Mt Isa. The view as we approached the city was of the huge chimneys from the mining works. I arrived at the hostel to find that I was the only backpacker, everyone else lived there and worked down the mines! There was only one other woman too and she was in her 50's! Everyone was very friendly but it was a little intimidating so I went to bed early, locked my door and put my earplugs in! The next day was a Sunday and everything in Mt Isa was shut including the supermarket! Luckily the museum stayed open (but not the cafe!) so I spent a few hours there learning about how the silver was found and the conditions the first miners ... read more

As a slight detour to our original plan (which was simply to make our way up the east coast to Cairns) we embarked on a trip that was to take us 12 days and 5,760km (approx 3,500 miles) west of our original destination - but, oh, was it worth it - it certainly was - every single step. We left Hervey Bay the day after our brilliant trip to Fraser Island and spent the next three days driving north to Rockhampton, then on further north to Gladstone, picking up the Capricorn Highway and beginning our adventure into the outback and towards the centre of Australia. It really was very different. We were able to drive long distances passing very few vehicles and as the miles went by the townships got smaller and less frequent. We ... read more

Well here’s another installment to our blog for you people out there following us. The East MacDonnell Ranges were just as nice as the west but not as busy. We stopped at Emily and Jesse’s Gaps which are gorges in the East MacDonnell range. There were well preserved aboriginal paintings on the rocks, we next headed off to Trephina Gorge. We took the short walk to the water where numerous budgerigars flocked to drink. It was quite amazing to watch them partially submerge themselves into the water before flying of just as quickly as they landed and in a large group form, the whole group seemed to fly and change directions so quickly and accurately. There was only one designated camp ground here for trailers and as it was quite rocky and still early we decided ... read more

Tuesday 05 June 2007 We’ve made it to Mt Isa and surprised Matt’s parents. They weren’t expecting us until Friday and we arrived yesterday - great to see Nanny’s face (photo included of course). We’ve had some fun in the last couple of days. We stayed at Bladensberg National Park just outside of Winton (still Central Eastern QLD) and finally met a family similar to ours!! Lily made a mate in Jack, Ethan kept harassing their 9 month old (and I thought we were doing it early!!) daughter Ivy and their parents Rebecca and Antony were I think just as happy to see other adults without grey hair as we were. They have been on the road for 3 months and are doing it a bit rougher than we are - pretty amazing really. They are ... read more

Sunday 03 June 2007 (2 weeks on the road) And they’re off…………..again. Today we are heading to a campground near Winton. We stayed at Barcaldine last night and Matt was in heaven. We camped at the show ground which also happened to be the footy field and as luck had it they had a match between Barcaldine and Winton - bit of a grudge match as Winton hadn’t lost a game for 19 years. We must have brought them luck as the Barky’s (sound local don’t I?) won woo hoo!! And I think the whole town celebrated at the club house (which is located at the show ground) until the wee hours of the morning. We woke at around mid night to the sound of ‘rolling, rolling, rolling down the river’, I think I may ... read more

Blog 14 Back to uncivilisation We had a few days to spare before meeting with Kate , but that was good it gave us the chance to call in on Sue’s sister Barb , and her husband Ronnie , they live on the outskirts of Brisbane, and how welcoming they were, we had a wonderful dinner , followed by ice cream , a rare treat , and a real bed for the night. Nice to see you Barb and Ronnie , and thank you for a lovely evening and for the use of the computer , eventually it did as it was told. We then drove to the glass house mountains ( named by Captain Cook , the shape of them reminded him of the big glass houses back in England). We were not far ... read more

Back to Cairns Jan 30th - Wow! Cairns is hot! Stepping off the plane was a bit of a shock to the system, going from a cool and windy Wellington morning, to an extremely hot and humid Cairns! This was going to take some getting used to. We had called the mechanic from the airport as he had agreed to pick us up in Betsy - so we could get on our way straight away. On our way back to the garage, Daryl broke it too us that Betsy was having a bit of a surging problem still, and that he hadn’t been able to figure out why. Oh-oh! Not what we had been hoping for as it didn’t mesh with our vision of sailing into the outback, free from any mechanical problems for the rest ... read more

Moikka taas, viimeista paivaa viedaan, tanaan saatiin sarvet ja pallit pois viimeisilta kuudeltasadalta nuorelta sonnilta... Laskeskelin huvikseni tassa illalla etta olen kasitellyt taallaoloaikanani varmaankin lahemmas 40 000 paata karjaa, nyt tuntuu ettei kesta oma paa nahda enaa yhtakaan. Huomenna on taas vapaata, kaikki lahtevat Georginatow... read more
