27th June - Had a great day at the QANTAS Museum in Longreach. It was the first base for the airline after it’s conception in Winton, 200km north. The 747 pictured, was donated in 2006 for the 82nd anniversary. The runway at Longreach is only 600m long! Half the length normally needed to land a Jumbo. Some feat!! Needless to say, it will never be able to leave here. 28th June - The intention today was to get to Cloncurry but, after an extended stop in Winton, of banjo Patterson fame, we decided to stay at McKinlay, behind the Walkabout Creek Hotel. It was the pub used to film a number of scenes in the first Crocodile Dundee movie. Snaps attached! We went through a heap of locus on the way here so I’ll be cleaning ... read more

Day 52 And were off and running, Mt Isa here we come. We spend all morning on the highway and arrive at about 3:29pm with parts shops closing at 3:30, we order our brakes from autobarn to the tune of 114 a rotor and 70 for pads. A bit of a ding in the pocket book. They will be in Tuesday. Alrighty, its not dark out for once so we look for a caravan park to be in town so we don’t have to drive this beast anymore than needed as the brakes are a constant scream and the whole rotor is torn to bits.. shes been getting hot. Our first Stop Copper caravan park, We pay for 2 night and head to the tent area… tent area my ass… its packed with caravans with no ... read more

Friday 23rd April The breeze we had yesterday dropped so it seems a lot hotter today. Went out to the airport which was the site of the first landing as Qantas. Also John Flynn started the flying doctor service. Lyle spoke to 2 generations of the Bob Norman family on a helicopter flight from Cairns to Adelaide. Went back to the town bought a couple of things including new tubes for the lights, both lights failed including the spare! Looked at the Cloncurry version of a department store selling everything except food. From household goods to hardware & toys and every thing in between. They had just bought in a truck load of seedlings from Townsville. Not so sure how they were going to fare in the heat. Left and went back to Gilberts Park to ... read more

Day 115 - Burke & Wills Roadhouse to Mt Isa Another hot start to the day and with the washing bone dry, us showered and the caravan packed up we were ready to set off again. We waved goodbye to everyone who came to the DASH Visitor Information Centre yesterday and we hope they have a great time wherever they are travelling too! Back on the bitumen our journey today will end in Mount Isa where we have some menial tasks to do. I need a new pair of hiking sandals as mine have fallen apart plus there’s the normal shopping and alcohol trip and we must buy an Esky! We decide not to get any veggies or much fruit within the shopping this time as we cross the border into the Northern Territory tomorrow and ... read more

We are now in Queensland and on Eastern Standard Time once again. After leaving Tennant Creek, we called into the old Telegraph Station a few kilometres out of town to have a look around and read how they lived there when it was very remote, and morse code was the manner of sending messages. There were small buildings for smoking meat, and keeping food cool underground, a blacksmith's and a butchering building - all interesting. It was then a long long drive though more outback country towards the border. There were quite a few caravans and motor homes heading west - making us glad we were going the other way. Quite a few pull over early at roadside clearings to get good campsites for the night. At one, Avon Downs, where we stopped to make afternoon ... read more

After leaving Alice Springs we traveled most of the day only stopping a couple of times, with one stop being at the Devil's Marbles. These roundish rocks are all in piles, balancing on eachother and looked pretty cool. It was nice to get out and stretch our legs mostly though lol. We stayed at a free camp spot along the Barkley Highway towards Mt Isa, about 70k out of Tennant Creek. We met an older couple traveling who invited us to their campfire. It was a nice night drinking tea/coffee and chatting. We spent the whole next day driving and arrived in Mt Isa to visit Neil and Lisa about 5pm on the Thursday. When we arrived Neil said what a great time to arrive as the Mt Isa rodeo was in town which is the ... read more

14/6/09 Well back through the narrow road to Bourke & Wills , Still no Gas, so put some fuel in it, enough to get us to Cloncurry. I had a nap - first time on the trip, I have done well. We reached Cloncurry, filled up with fuel & had lunch & decided to go 60k’s to Fountain Springs Rest Area, no 304 QLD in the book. We got there about 2.30 & were surprised it was full. There must have been 30 vans in there, we squeezed into a spot then someone put up a tent under our window, but never mind it was a good night & a great happy hour & we saw a lot of familiar faces from other free camps. Some people had been there 4 nights & most were off ... read more

Hi everyone We arrived at the Isa after a good time up at Kuramba, and Gregory Downs. At Kuramba we stayed 3 nights, went out on a half day fishing charter in the gulf, and came home with 11 fish, 3 different varieties. Chris caught more than me!! Must be loosing my touch! We left there, and drove down to Burke and Wills roadhouse, then headed west to Gregory Downs, where we free parked beside a nice , swift flowing river for 3 nights. We left the van there, and drove in on a dusty rough road to Lawn Hill to the National Park. We used our tent for the first time, and camped a night at Adels Grove nearby. We hired a canoe and paddled up the river, past a waterfall, (we carried the canoe ... read more

Tuesday April 14 2009 was our last day in Cairns. We had already spent 2 weeks in the city, which was just as much time as we had spent in Sydney. So it was time to move on to Alice Springs and journey to the Red Centre of Australia! Of course this happened to be on a Tuesday, so early that morning we made sure to check out another movie at the theatre across the street. Lol We saw DragonBall Evolution. It was fun. It took a lot of liberties with the original story, but as long as you recognized that and didn’t let it bother you, it was enjoyable. After the movie we hopped on the Greyhound bus to Townsville. The problem with getting to Alice Springs is that you have to backtrack along the ... read more

After such a long stretch of driving it was nice to finally reach some form of civilisation. (This is a phrase rather than our actual feelings on Australia as a civilised country!) The town actually had shops and people bussling around and we headed to the tourist centre to take advantage of the ammenities and ask a few questions. We checked out some prices of tourist activities but once again opted for the free option and drove to the nearby lake of Moondarra. The weather was great for what was supposed to be winter time and we spent much of the afternoon enjoying a bbq and some quality play time in the sunshine. As the day drew to a close we headed further east to a town called Cloncurry and stopped in a nearby rest stop ... read more
