It has been a bit of a rough start to this leg of our journey. We left Mareeba late in the afternoon and headed straight for the hill climb up the range through Ravenshoe. (Qld’s highest town) The rodeo struggled in second gear so we knew we wouldn’t get far till it started to get dark and were all set to camp at Archer Creek where we have camped once before except when we got there it was all blocked off for the markets the next day. So we then had to quickly change our plan and ended up staying at Mt Garnet for the night. The new Avan performed well for us went up easily for us even in the dark. Sunday we headed off again and weren't long out of Mt Garnet when we ... read more

On Saturday 6th August we awoke to a pleasantly warm morning. We didn’t need the heater that had been put to good use the previous morning – there was a little bit of cloud about so no real chill in the air. Today was to be a leisurely day after the exertions of yesterday’s mine tour. We had a few places we wanted to visit but our main aim today was to find our way to Lake Moondara for a picnic lunch. First, though, we went back to the Visitor Centre where there was a section we hadn’t visited – The Riversleigh Centre. Riversleigh is in a remote part of Queensland 250 kms north west of Mt Isa and covers about 80 square kms. It is world famous for its fossils – one of the richest ... read more

Tuesday 2nd – at 8.42 we were on our way out of the caravan park. We had considered staying another day but decided to go with some great memories. We had woken up to a peculiar, cloudy sky and a cooler temperature but the skies gradually cleared to become the blue we are used to. We made good time and arrived at Dunmarra Roadhouse at about 10.30am. Dunmarra has been an important stopping point for traffic ever since the early pioneers came to the area, as its midway between Katherine and Tennant Creek. It was an interesting place and full of character with murals and photos dotted around. Added to that, some of the large convoy of army vehicles we had seen travelling north were stopped there. Apparently all the equipment is headed for Afghanistan presumably ... read more

6/4/11 - Good flights, caught the train to pick up truck, flat battery, no worries and we have found our way around ok. We spent 4 nights in Brizzy with Linda and Tim who have done a beautiful job restoring a century old Queenslander home on the edge of the Brisbane River (far enough and high enough to not be flooded in January) . (Linda was my best friend at high school). She is right into Italian food, having spent a holiday in Siena at a cooking and language school. So we dined very well on authentic Italian food - yummy, and I enjoyed their pool and met “Russell” the water dragon who enjoyed sunbathing on the rocks at the edge of the pool. Thanks Linda and Tim for your great hospitality, help and gourmet meals! ... read more

We are now in Mt Isa and have at last found some sunshine. In fact it is scorching - no pleasing some people. Barry has burnt his shoulders in their first outing this year. The trip up here has been mostly quite boring, the countryside is so incredibly flat and featureless. We have seen lots of Roos and Emus and plenty of eagles - mostly eating the copious amounts of roadkill. We had a bit of excitement on our way to Blackall, when the rear nearside tyre exploded! It was then that we discovered that the jack wouldn’t go up enough to get the spare wheel on! But ever resourceful Barry got round it in the end without the van falling on his head (which was my worry!) Blackall is the town where the first bore ... read more

Did a long drive to catch up with some friends. The landscape is constantly changing. Driving from Concurry to Mt Isa the land went from open and flat to hilly and spotted with trees, nice change. Boys had a good time three days of rest and recovery. We bought some yabby traps but only caught a couple of turtles. We packed the car and went for a picnic by the lake with the Hutton’s. We had a couple of large birds hanging around and an eagle. So after dinner the boys decide to feed the birds. Not the best feeling to have large birds circling our heads. Our last day we went to the Family fun park. It was amazing. They boys loved the water area and climbing area. A little oasis in the middle of ... read more

Today we stayed around Mt Isa in recovery mode after the long trip yesterday. The weather was clear but windy. It warmed up during the afternoon. This is very much a mining town - the mines produce lead, copper, tin, silver and gold. We walked up to Observation Hill, along Rodeo Drive, had lunch in a coffee shop, had the windscreen fixed, and then visited the Underground Hospital. This hospital had been built inWW2 as security in case the town was bombed - but the Japanese only bombed Darwin. We then went out to Lake Moondarra which is the water supply dam for the town. We are now prepared for the long trip to Hughenden tomorrow. As an aside we were walking down the main street and some Aboriginal children looked at me and told me ... read more

We arose early as we were leaving Tennant Creek to begin our long journey across the Great Artesian Basin to Mt Isa. The day was clear and cool and sun strike was the early problem. As we left town we were almost wiped out by a road train turning across our bow. This was really scary, we came up to the lights and we had the right of way green light. Luckily Graham noticed this huge road train come hurtling through a red light. The driver waved to us as he negotiated the sharp corner. The first two trailers went through, the third cut right in across the footpath and the fourth just about took the light and us out. It broke the footpath. All we could see was this trailer wobbling over the top ... read more

We had a great few days in Mount Isa taking in two excursions (well 3 if we’re counting the night at the Irish Club watching Origin 3). The two we are talking about being the Underground Mine Tour and the coach journey actually in and around a real mine. Both were excellent. You really start to appreciate the scale of things. Open cut 800 metres deep, underground nearly 2km deep. Trucks carrying 250 tonnes of ore. We leave Isa making our way west and then south, Alice Springs and Uluru being our major destinations. It took 6 days to get to Alice staying 2 nights on the QLD border at Camooweal (we’ll come back to Camooweal in a minute) then travelling west on the Barkly Highway, crossing the border into Northern Territory, stopping at Barkly Homestead ... read more

We have been here in Australia for almost two months!! We have found a campervan and named it Flip. We have traveled up the east coast all the way up to the top. We are now in the middle of the outback in Mt Isa. We have been able to not pay for a campsite since we went to the Great Barrier Reef, but our vehcile is getting fixed so we have been homeless for a week. We have rented a cabin in this small town, and have been getting our fix of TV since we have been here. Since Sydney the main highlights of our trip so far have been: -Dolphins at Wallaby point... just a week of being here living in our van we went to a small town beach for tyler to try ... read more
