Happy 34th birthday Tom. Special day. Special person. Washed clothes. Dried. Sorted bags. Washed Prado. Yes, washed Prado. (We talk to each other. We are nice to each other. We have many more years to go in our relationship. We are faithful to each other). I do the same with Jane. Refilled the water tank. Refuelled. Replenished supplies. Charged lithium battery. Planned tomorrow. Checked footy scores. Warned friends that I had been hacked ... all good. Shaved. Rested. Oh yeah, ate. (I love eating. I really do. Overactive taste buds). Read. Now to sleep.... read more

Too much driving today. Nearly 700kms. Road surfaces varied from smooth gravel, very dusty surfaces, rough stone, narrow one lane bitumen, bitumen wide enough for two vehicles to pass but with no shoulder. This was surprising for us as Mt Isa is a major town in north-western Qld. There were more Floodways, creeks (mainly dry) and river crossings (also mainly dry or with pooled water), than on any other road travelled so far. First stop was Bedourie, 191km from Birdsville. It is the headquarters of the vast Diamantina Shire which is bigger than the country of Denmark. Beef production, tourism and mining exploration are the major industries. From here it was onto Boulia, also a distance of 191km. Approximately 120km north of Bedourie we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn where obligatory photo was taken. We stopped ... read more

The day was finally here. After months of planning, cancelled flights, border closures and the uncertainty of covid, I was at the airport, mask on my face and ready to board a plane for the first time in 14 months! After three flights via Brisbane and Townsville, I arrived in Mt Isa just before sunset. I stepped off the plane onto the traditional land of the Kalkadoon people, the traditional owners of the land and known as the elite of the Aboriginal warriors of Queensland. Mt Isa isn't a typical tourist destination. The town was built around the mining boom in 1924 and has thrived ever since. Located nine hours inland from Townsville, it's a tiny dot on the map in north-west Queensland, far from the coast and other major cities. Situated on the banks of ... read more

Another big driving day today! headed off at sparrow f@rt to make sure we had plenty of time to get to Mt Isa. We needed to be somewhere that was sure to have a dawn service for Anzac Day tomorrow. Not a lot of towns between here and there up this way! Unfortunately we had to get diesel so had to wait in Normanton until the shop opened at 7am. So we made a cuppa and toast in our camp toaster and waited it out. On the way here though, we saw dozens, and I really mean dozens, of dead little kangaroos or wallabies on the road. It was very weird and very sad. They looked more like kangas but were very small. Rob drove pretty quietly to give the heaps of little guys on the ... read more

We woke at 8am but didn’t hurry out of bed this morning. We both felt a bit lazy. From the window, we could see the open cut mine slag heaps and the trucks taking stuff up the steep road to dump on them, and the 270m exhaust stack from the lead smelter. We decided to see the Outback Experience at the Visitor Information Centre as a start to learning more about the mining in Isa. Outside the building was a huge replica of one of the smelting buckets in the process of pouring out the molten copper. I couldn’t resist touching the flow – and guess what, it wasn’t hot! Inside, we paid for the Experience and the Fossil Centre, and for a look down the Hard Times Mine tomorrow morning. We started off in the ... read more

We were up at 7am and set off by 9.15am for Mt Isa. Barry had been periodically seeing small fast birds since yesterday, which he swore were budgies, but I only ever had a glimpse, backlit, as they moved so fast. When we stopped at Terry’s Lookout for a break and snack, though, I found a small group of them sitting in a tree and feeding under it. He felt very vindicated! Continuing on, we passed a dead black cow next to the road. I bet that did some damage to a vehicle. We stopped at Cloncurry and went to the Museum attached to the Visitor Information Centre. It had an interesting area about the Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine that was closed down in the mid-1980s. It showed photos of the township looking like any small ... read more

As we drove today along this boring baron country ravaged by drought, the scenery begins to change the closer we get to Clem Walton Park we get, now into red rocky mountains, a welcome change for sure. On arriving at Clem Walton Park, we found ourselves a camp along a river, a dry river, but none the less a river with magical views of red rock cliffs with the odd wallaby out for an evening hop. For a brief moment, the weather was warm enough to finally get the shorts on, at last a sign we were leaving the winter behind! It became apparent today, if you don't own a toyota 4WD drive of some description, or any other type of 4WD RV vehichle, and aren't towing some sort of RV vehicle behind, you just aren't ... read more

Out of contact for a couple of days , left Karumba and headed for Burke and Wills road house which is quite unique and famous, every one stops there to fill up and have a snack,we had intended to stay overnight but it was still only just after midday so we decided to push on to Gregory Downs, a small hamlet on the banks of the Gregory river, which is the gateway to adels grove. One pub which also serves fuel and also has a camp site behind, no power but water connected and hot and cold showers and toilets, there is a free camp site about a 1000 mts away on vacant ground but was fairly ridden with broken bottles and lots of rubbish, it turned out to be the place the locals partied at night. We ... read more

6th November 2012. Another warm morning and after breakfast, we headed into Mt Isa. Once in Mt Isa, we started calling several mechanics to have Taylor fixed (After almost losing her when we drove through the dust holes on the Burke Developmental Road). We left Taylor at the mechanic and went for a drive into town. When the temperature gauge began to climb, we decided to head to the local Big4 caravan park. We spoilt ourselves and checked into a 2 bedroom, air-conditioned cabin since we didn't know when Taylor would be ready. We relaxed, had lunch, relaxed some more and headed to the pool. Ahh, we are still on holiday mode. After that horse race, Daniel got the phone call that Taylor is ready. Daniel left to fetch Taylor while we stayed at the pool ... read more

18th August 2012 We left our interesting BP campsite at about 7:45am and headed inland along the Overlander's Way (the way between Townsville and Tennant Creek). The landscape changed as we drove, becoming less tropical and more temperate woodland. We saw a bustard and an emu, and drove through sections of golden wattle and fern leafed grevillea. We had morning tea at a rest point on the outskirts of Charters Towers, and lunch at White Mountain lookout. We stopped at Hughenden to see the Flinders Discovery Centre, which has a very good replica of a Muttaburrasaurus skeleton. The Muttaburrasaurus is a herbivore that got up to 10m long, and was found near Hughenden, at Muttaburra. Around Hughenden the scenery was open grassland with few trees and the occasional cattle or sheep. We camped at the Lakeview ... read more
