21st-25th Oct 2008
21st Oct 2008 Happy Birthday Lisa!! Got the
Greyhound to
Townsville, we had a 6 hour bus ride. The girl in front of us stank of BO it was making us urge...Yuk! We arrived at townsville then had a 20minute ferry ride to
Magnetic Island aka
Maggy. When we got on the island we herd there was a crocodile on the loose.... Ahhhh, abit sceary!! Checked in to
Travellers Hideaway at
Picnic Beach really nice little hostel, with a swimming pool, with hammacks by it, bbq area, tv+internet room. We are in a 4 bed dorm, sharing with 2 swedish girls, who seem really nice!
Couldnt really look around the place as it was abit late and it gets dark quite early so over to the bar which was over the road from the hostel and had a couple drinks and played abit of pool... After a couple games we then went to the bottle shop which was abit off from the bar to get some drinks to take back to the hostel.
22nd Oct 2008 Got up early and caught the daily bus to explore the island... Stopped off at a place
called
Alma Bay to find it closed... The ranger which was watching the beach said we couldnt even go on to the beach because of the croc which was on the loose. So decided to do a couple of the walking treks in the bush of the island. Saw a couple of wild koala's high in the trees and loads of little scatty lizards on the ground... Walk 3 hours solid up and down steep outback hills... Pretty hard going!!... So tiring becuase of the heat!!.. Didnt wanted to go on no more! :( Was sooo steap even worse then the Waterfall trek in Thailand lol!
Felt like we walked for miles and miles infact i think we did!!.. eventully we got to
Horseshoe Bay.. Sat down and grabbed some lunch then went for a well earned rest on the beach... This was the only beach that was open on the whole island... It has stinger nets which you could go in... Walked down from the beach to find a small walking trek which took you to a little cove bay... The beach was completely empty and was soo amazing... was a little scared about going into the water though
because of the croc even though you could if you wanted because there was no one there to tell you, you couldnt...
The croc is a really big thing on the island as its all in the news and papers... It says the croc is terrorising the community. Had one lady when we were on the bus saying that they were gonna get the big boys from cairns to shot it... Stayed at the little cove for about an hour then headed back to horseshoe, when we got back to horseshoe the tide had come in and the walk way which we used first of all was now a small flowing river... We didnt know what to do as we were still scared about the croc getting us... After about 10 minutes of trying to find another way across... We decided that we could only go through the river!!... We went across it as fast as we could! lol... The water turned out to be only knee deep and when we turned around once over the river thing... A couple locals just strolled across without even worrying... Silly us.. hehe
Cooked our 1st BBQ that
night and had steak... The steak is so cheap over here too buy and taste pretty good too... Just chilled out for the rest of the night having a couple beers...
23rd Oct 2008 Woke in the morning to find little colourful parrots eating away at some mango left on the fence for them by the hostel owner... After breakfast we got a bus to
Forts Walk We saw a koala on our travels which was at eye level you could touch it if you dared but best not too though ha.. one of the locals said that the thing would tear you apart... It also had a little baby all cuddled up in her arms... awww sooo cute... The popped his little head out when lewis snapped a banch by mistake trying to take a photo... But turned out good because the koala looked right at us!!.. once at the top of the walk we came to an war old look out point which overlooked the whole island it was amazing... Had great veiws of
Florence bay.... After doing the walk which took us about an hour we headed down to the bay which we could see
from the look out point.
To get to the bay you have to follow a road which is soooooo steap that it feels like your about to fall over all the time haa!... this road was really only ment for 4x4 cars... Once we got to the end of the track we got to the Bay which was another amazing and empty cove... We set up camp and had a little sunbathe and went for a paddle in the sea.. but didnt go out to far because we were still a little scared of the croc eating us! We spent a couple hours on Florence bay and then started our dreadful hill climb back!!... Wasnt going to enjoy the walk as it was sooo hot aswell!!..
As we started to get to the steap hill we heard a jeep driving up behind us.. We started joking how amazing it would be if they stopped and offered us a lift up the hill... As it came towards us it slowed down and stopped beside us... The Ozzy couple said 'Hey guys want a lift up the hill' We were like 'OMG YEAAAAAAA' It was a life saver someone must have been
looking down on us from above hehe...
We jumped in the back and started the hill climb... The couple were from Sydney and said they knew how knackering the hill climb was because they did it the day before... Not only did they drop us to the top of the hill... where we was gonna just get a bus but they dropped us to the stop we wanted called
Arcadia bless um they were soooo nice!!... Couldnt believe our luck!..
Been getting drinks from the bar which has a bottle shop and going back to the hostel and drinking with a few other backpackers....
24th Oct 2008 RELAXING DAY TODAY NO WALKING HOORAY!!...
Started the morning with kirsty having a little frog joining her in the shower but couldnt have liked the taste of the shower gel and hopped out. The swedish girls left today... So prehaps we'll have the room to ourselfs... We caught the bus after breakfast went to Arcadia and chilled next to the swimming pool allday!! was soooo nice... They also had a big bouncy inflatable which was pretty fun but sooo hot from the sun!!.. Got back and found a german
couple in the room... they were nice and spoke to them all night.
25th Oct 2008 Happy Birthday Louise!! Went and got some fruit to feed the
Rock wallabies at
Geoffrey Bayloads came out from the rocks they were like massive rats!!... they were loving the fruit we gave them but fighting over it by biting each others tails... hehe... Kirsty opened out our last whole banana and started feeding one of the wallabies, he grab it from the base and knicked the whole thing!!... haaa... so that was the end of feeding time... After we went to relax by the pool again...
That night we cooked a huge steak on the BBQ was soooo nice and we ate loads!!!... Nothing new there then haa!!.. Stayed in that night and watched TV and drank a couple beers, there isn't really much to do on this island at night... There is a Pub but not many people go there...
The island was a really nice place stay and the weather was sooo nice every day!!... We did a hell of alot of walking which wore kirsty's sandles down to pretty much nothing... She could feel every
stone on the floor on one foot... But it was a good experience as you do see alot of wildlife and amazing views..!!
