So writing something on an internet blog seems easier than it actually is. Lack of internet time, good pictures and stories caused some delay with our first blog entry, but here it finally is!
Our first day in Australia was in Brisbane. We hung around a bit, visited some parks, enjoyed the winter weather (which has been an average of 20-25 degrees with nice water temperatures) but mostly slept off our "jetlag". Nothing much happend and after a loooong night, we headed towards a little coast town called Noosa where we met Rowan's friend Eric.
Seeing Eric was lots of fun and together we spend around 4 days in Noosa. Noosa is mostly beach and surfing, but there are also some national parks around which we explored a bit. We did a small hike in which we switched from breath-taking ocean views to rainforest like woods within minutes. It was said that there were koala's around, but unfortunatly
we did not see one. On another day we hired bikes for a couple of hours and visited an island where kangoroo's would live, they however didn't show up as well. So far no luck with the wildlife. Other than this,
we spend our time visiting the small city, eating ice-cream, playing table tennis and hanging out in the sun. It feels weird to be in a holiday vibe when you think that you will be away for actually 6 months.
After we said goodbye to Eric, we went to hang out at the beach and plan the rest of our Australia trip. As soon as we set foot in the national park, leading to the beach, we saw our first Koala. It did not move an inch, and as a matter of fact when we returned 4 hours later it still hadn't moved.
After Noosa we travelled to Hervey Bay, this is a coast town most famous for its access to Fraser Island.
This Island is on the world herritage list and is in fact the biggest sand island in the world. We booked a self-drive safari, which basically means that you group up with backpackers and take a 4 wheel drive and some tents and spend 3 days on the island. Fraser Island has no paved roads at all, so it was definatly a bumpy weekend. The Island has however beautiful lakes (crystal clear water), long strectched
beaches and beautiful views. While being here we saw Whales (from the coast), big lizard leguana's and some dingo's. The second night, we camped at the beach without any water access or anything. If you had to go to the toillett, a shovel is your friend.
We'll leave hervey bay in a couple of hours and will now travel to Bundaberg, a town famous for it's rum and fruitpicking. We will however travel to the coast and try to reach some good snorkeling locations. We'll probably meet 2 french guys we met on our Fraser Island trip and drive along the coast a bit tomorrow.
So far the update on our travelling, writing is not so easy as it seems, but I hope the pictures are a bit nice to watch :)
Byebye,
Rowan and Sabrina
