In the morning we were up early to pack all of our stuff, nip to the supermarket for some last minute supplies and we were then put into 4 separate groups as there were 4 cars. Me and Freeman were in group 1, which was the lead driver and guide Geoff's car which unfortunately meant we couldn't drive. However, Geoff assured us that we would get our turn to drive one of the other cars. I sat in the front to be DJ and I had a good chat with Geoff, he was a really cool guy, seemed very laid back with not too many rules and everybody at the hostel had told us he was the best guide, winning! After a quick safety briefing where Geoff told us to ignore everything from the safety video ... read more

Some people say Surfers Paradise is a suburb from Brisbane. So it didn't take much time to get to Brisbane. We made a photo stop at kangaroos point. I saw another lizard and over the way is a Mormon temple out marble. Below kangaroos point you can climb up a steep face. We made a sightseeing tour with our bus through Brisbane but we could not see too much because the bus ceiling blocked the view or the interesting thing was at the other site of the bus. At the end we stopped at Newstead Park to see the sausages tree. Our lunch break was at a Matilda rest house. Some animals were arround a pond. Next stop Maryborough a small town with a very old and big tree. Maryborough is the birth town of the ... read more

Fraser Island After a good night’s sleep in the streets of Airlie Beach, we went shopping and hit for the road. We had quite some road to cover, so apart from stopping for a lookout point, we were more or less driving the whole day. We passed Mackay and Rockhampton fairly quickly, and stopped for the night at a very nice riverside rest area. Cooked in the dark and ate in the car before turning in. Still having quite some kilometers to cover, we started early in the morning, hitting the road in the direction of Bundaberg. Knowing that the German couple would be waiting for us in Rainbow Beach, the gateway to Fraser Island, left us little time to explore our surroundings, however, time for a guided tour at Bundaberg Rum Distillery had to be ... read more

Woke up early and caught the bus with Adam and Amy to Hervey Bay as they are going a day early so are not on the same Fraser trip. There wasn't much to do in Hervey Bay so we sat by the pool while I waited for my Fraser trip meeting and briefing. At the meeting I didn't find out that much it was all a bit vague and rushed! Also no one really chatted to me so I wasn't sure on the groups and who I would be with. Adam and Amy had tried to introduce me to two couples they had met on the bush camp so that I could be in their car group etc but they didn't really make an effort with me and I felt a little like a third wheel ... read more

Got to Rainbow Beach at about 12. Checked into the hostel. The room looked like a Thai jail. 10 beds in a dark dank room. Awful. Had a safety briefing ready for leaving to the island in the morning. We had to watch a dvd about driving in sand and then one for being 'dingo safe'. The dvd told us to cross our arms across our chests and back away from dingoes. What a load of rubbish.. The guides said don't do that as covering your nipples won't protect you from a dingo! Was also below a couple in my bed again. Terrible nights sleep. Had to get up at 6am to be ready to leave at half 7. All these early mornings are killing me! Got into our groups. I could tell that my group ... read more

I flew out of Alice Springs; destination Brisbane. I'd booked a cheap flight and fully expected a no-frills budget airline. You can imagine my excitement and glee when I boarded a Quantas flight, complete with in-flight entertainment and lunch included. Result! I watched a movie, tucked into a sandwich and stared with wonder out of the window at the red desert landscape below. I've never seen anything like that before. I touched down in Brisbane and managed to find my way into the city pretty easily, and it took just 45 minutes. I lugged all my heavy bags to the nicest hostel I've ever stayed in. It has a rooftop pool, great views over the city and, best of all, I had a single bed and not a bunk bed! So unusual for hostels and I ... read more

It was the first night bus we had taken since South America but it wasn't quite up to South American standards as two hours into the journey the bus broke down. I decided to just get on with it and as I can sleep anywhere curled up in a ball along the two seats and fell to sleep. We arrived at our destination Agnes Water two hours later than planned with Q in tow. We hadn't booked a hostel previously but got approached by three when stepping off the bus so Jon tried to do some haggling to get us the cheapest price. Maybe they had made an agreement together before but they were having none of it so decided to go with Cool Bananas hostel due to it being closer to the 'city' and the ... read more
