I woke at 7.30am to Kookaburras calling across the woods and went outside to see what was around. Right opposite me, standing in our paddock next to the gate into the wood was a wallaby watching me. I turned to close the van door quietly as Barry was still sleeping, but when I turned back she was gone. I walked into the wood to see if I could find her, but she’d disappeared and I didn’t hear a thing. I decided to go a bit further and explore, although the path was very overgrown and full of the grass with the prickly head that sticks to your clothes. It was beautiful with the sun shining through the trees creating patterns everywhere. There were literally hundreds of birds singing their morning chorus all around me but I ... read more

On Thursday morning we drove through Bundaberg and headed out through sugar cane country lobbing at the lovely town of Burnett Heads. We checked into a council run caravan park whose onsite caretakers would put some of the big business parks to shame. Well tended gardens, freshly mowed lawns and superb bathroom and laundry facilities had us pleased with our decision to stay. Our site overlooked the mouth of the Burnett River and with not a cloud in the sky we could not have asked for a better day. Later in the evening we put the task of cooking tea in the 'too hard basket' and hit the local fish and chip shop to test some of the local cuisine. The burgers they served up were a sensation and the shop even had a quality array ... read more

Saturday 30th July Had another great night at the carvan park with a sing a long with the words to songs on a big screen. One of the owners of the park, Brendon, with his daughter and wife helped with some of the singing. It was a little cool again so everyone only stayed until about 7.30 then back to the vans to get warm. Sunday 31st July Headed to Childers to check out the Multicultural festival and to see the pub John's brother Bill used to own. It was the Grand Hotel in the main street of Childers and now it is all trendy with a new front bar and polished floors etc and a trendy beer garden out the back - Bill would be very surprised. We stayed at this pub when we did ... read more

Childers. What a delightful little place - and how we have grown to appreciate all its wonders over the past WEEK! Bother and more bother - Trevor is terribly sick and hence we have been stuck here in Childers for a whole week. Hats off to Trevor for stranding us in Childers though - the place is fraught with geriatrics. Its one street is lined with grannies - yesterday there was a craft bazaar - wow, you should have seen the bunfight that went down - crazy old ladies all hustling over hand-knitted tea-cosies and the latest bookmark but the crusty old men sat sucking back cold ones in the hotel bars from 9am - good thing they have 3 hotels to choose from - 1 would certainly not be enough as anyone who's anyone comes ... read more

Arrived in Australia and bought a car (1990 Ford Corsair) for $1400, set up bank accounts, got tax file numbers, medicare health insurance etc and then looked for jobs! In the first week of arriving, we met up with a couple of friends from England (Amy - who I went to uni with and lived with in my 3rd year) so that was really nice and also saw Nick and Becky in Toowoomba. Secured a cotton farming job that was to start later on in April, but for now have taken jobs as lemon pickers in Childers, Queensland on a large citrus and avocado farm. We stayed in a working hostel with lots of other backpackers. Not great first impressions - fleas in the beds etc. We worked on the cotton farm for a couple of ... read more

Hoi!

Well folks after New Years we had a couple of more days in the apartment before we had to sadly leave it and go back to hostel world! Emma left and headed back to Melbourne as she worked there at that time, Sam and Cat stayed at a hostel in Glebe and me and Laura headed to Bondi Beach for a few days-it was fantastic! We spent some time on the famous beach and chilled out before heading back to stay in the city centre at 'Sydney Backpackers' which is a awesome hostel right in the heart of the city! One day we got together with Sam and Cat and also with a friend Laura had made in Adelaide called Brooke who was a Aussie living in Sydney and we went up the Sydney Sky Tower ... read more

Noosa deluge. Went to surf club to dry. Pacific gull flock feeding. Spectacular diving even in the pelting rain. Northward to Gympie. Newspaper photo and interview. Spruiked well. More comments on tv appearance. Family having lunch. Sister talking to owner. Got on to flag. He'd gotten sticker last time I was in town. She said get a flag for wall. He did!!!!! Right not being funny but there was a tumble weed going past the bus on the way to this place. Absolutely sod all there and the receptionist in a place called The Sugar Bowl is an absolute cow. Childers is a place for backpackers to work on the multiple farms fruit picking. Poor Rob far left in picture was working on tomato farm picking tomatoes. It sounded like some sort of slave trade where they would be shouted at one for not using two hands, two for not being fast enough and three for not removing all the stalks. They may as well be walking around with chains being whipped bless them. Stayed there three days.... just to return the jumper I stole from Rob in Brissie ;p Was quite the little house wife making dinner ... read more
