Well, once again we woke up to rain but we weren't going to let that stop us. We piled into the car and headed on our way further north. We encountered some water on the road from all the rain in the area and hoped it wasn't a sign to come that the roads were flooded and we'd have to turn around. We continued on our way and by the time we got to the ferry terminal where you have to take a barge ferry across the river to get up into the Daintree/Cape trib area the rain was pouring down. The lady informed us that she hadn't heard anything about flooded roads and the ferry was still operating.
So, we crossed the big brown river and continued on our way. The rain would let up every so often and we would see smidgens on blue sky. Our first stop was the Discovery center which has an elevated boardwalk through the Daintree rainforest. If you ever make it up to this area I recommend going to the Discovery Center! We were each given a book with numbers explaining what each kind of tree was and all kind of info about
the rainforest. It was pouring non stop as we were walking around. Luckily we each had our own umbrella. They have a interpretive center part of the way in so we stopped in there to get a bit dry again and learn more info.
They have a big replica of a Cassowary bird in there so we had fun taking pics with it. Cassowaries live in the rainforest and are related to the Emu bird family. We didn't see any in the wild but we certainly tried. You can climb a tower as well that overlooks the rainforest so we climbed up there. Great view! It was a great walk through there even if it poured the whole time haha.
We continued on our way up and after stopping to eat our lunch in the car we stopped at a tropical fruit farm that also makes ice cream. We talked to the lady there and learnt some more about the area. We also had some of their ice cream. You get 4 flavors in one cup. We got Mango, banana, wattle seed and mamey sapote. Wattle seed is used by aboriginal a lot in their cooking and it
has a coffee flavor in the ice cream super yummy!
We continued on our way but were met with yet another road block. A tree fell on the road AGAIN. Seems to be happening to us a lot on this trip haha. We waited 15 minutes or so well the boys cleared the road and we were on our way again. Cape tribulation is a beach with a rainforest. It's a beautiful place and even though we didn't have clear blue skies and sun it was still stunning. We did get a break in the rain and some blue sky but it didn't last long.
On our way back into Port Douglas is was suggested to us to stop in at this resort called Silky Oaks. It's in the middle of the rainforest. So we stopped in. It's a beautiful place with all these little eco cabins in and amongst the rainforest. As we got out of our car we were greeted by a bush turkey that I named hop a long as he only had one leg and hopped around. He followed us down to the entrance. Part of the river there is flooded so we couldn't
get to some parts. Nice place but VERY expensive.
