The main attractions in Cairns are not the city itself, but the surroundings. Up in the mountains is a little village called Kuranda. The journey up to the village is by narrow gauge railway and the journey back is by cable car. The village is set up high in the mountains and is a funky little place full of art and craft shops. We bought Gavin and Leigh's wedding present here and shipped it back to Skye!
The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas was spectacular and almost as nice as the Great Ocean Road in places. The road follows the side of the mountain and the ocean weaves in and out of sight. It's a shame it's the main northern highway as you want to spend time admiring the views.
Port Douglas is a great little town. It's a funky place with nice bars and cafes and has a great four mile beach close to the town centre. It's not too commercial up there, but there's enough money around to bring nice shops and bars. Many Aussies migrate up to Port Douglas area from Melbourne/Adelaide and even Sydney during the winter as is nice and warm, but not

The journey was a bit precarious at times! as humid as Darwin. We visited at the perfect time as there were not too many tourists around.
