Well here is a overview of the next 6 months of our time here in Australia up until Christmas 2009.
We moved up from Brisbane and Moved in to the shared house with Sharon(sheilas Cousin), Sam (french canadian), and Jade(Korean), and of course not forgetting Koken, Shelby and Willie. Over the time Sam went back to Canada, Jade went to Brisbane to be with her boyfriend and then came back again and Jean came and went within a few months. At the moment we have Scott and Sean (both Australian) in the house as well as the 3 of us and the Animals.
Well getting back to the first few days of moving up here, we both started by sending out Resumes and within a couple of days Sheila had a job in the respite Centre she still works for formally known at Whitsunday Flexable Respite Centre and now known as Compass Whitsundays. Henry found work on and off but found it difficult due to the lack of building work because of the recession, but did work for an agency and a number of other local firms including a couple of months work on Hamilton Island for the agency AWX. Then
just before Christmas going down to Brisbane to do 4 weeks work for a landscaping company returning in time for Christmas.
During our time here within the last 6 months we have done a large amount of day trips around the islands and to the surrounding areas of Cannonvale.
We often spend our days off relaxing out at Hydaway Bay having a few drinks at Montes, or going to Dingo beach. Often watching the sunset out at Proserpine dam. We have done a number of day trips on some of the boats including Raggamuffin trip to whitehaven, and Ocean rafting to Mantaray Bay and Bali Hai for snorkelling then on to Whitehaven beach and a nice walk up to the lookout point to see the swirling sands agross at the hill inlet. We went on the wednesday evening yacht racing on the largest sailing yacht in the area. The Merit which is a 60 ft sailing vessel which has taken part in the Sydney to Hobart race over Christmas a number of times and last year was the vessel to save some other stricked crew, along with still managing to complete very highly in its class of the race. Sheila
did the Croc safari (henry is looking forward to doing this one with the boys). We have enjoyed relaxing and taking walks out at Cedar creek falls but as yet due to the dry season the falls have not been running but the water is cool and refreshing in the heat of the day. We have been chasing the Soldier crabs down on Conway beach though Sheila will not let Henry Surf in the water there, no matter how good the wave may look on a windy day,( the beach is near the mouth of the Proserpine river which is home to the largest population of salt water crocodiles on the east coast of Australia). Due to the lack of surf here in the Whitsundays henry has taken up Windsurfing and we are often seen driving our dear "Evlie" out to Hydaway bay with a large old windsurfing board on the roof (henry has borrowed this off a friend of ours). Though on a good easterly onshore wind henry goes to Mackay and Gets a bit of a surf in (2 hours south). We went to Eungella National Park which is near Mackay(1.5hours inland) and saw the amazing sight of
Platypus in the wild there. One of the only places where you are able to see them in there natural habitat. We also raced the train down towards Mackay and enjoyed the Tooting of the Train driver as we Cruised along beside him. Henry and I have also enjoyed other water sports like Jetskiing, along with so many crazy nights out in Airlie to celebrate so many different reasons (Any excuse for a party) we've had Christmas in July, Birthdays, Jimmy Buffet Street Party and a whole array of Random nights out in Airlie Beach, not to mention the weekend away on Hamilton Island Which coincided with the end of the world known Hamilton Island Race week. the Race week party was a blast as was the relaxing days on the beach and the early morning breakfast with the koalas.
We have driven up to Bowen a couple of times and have seen the beautiful sunsets the smoke from the burning Sugar cane (the Main crop in this area) makes.
We are both waiting at present for a response from the Australian immigration department as Compass Whitsundays has sponsored us both (Sheila to work for them and Henry as a
defacto partner of Sheila) if this gets granted we are looking forward to a visit home to the Uk and if not to Going home and making more plans the future.
