It's a weird thing to do - load your belongings into a large tin container and drag it behind you as you drive around another country. But when the country is as big as Australia, it’s the best way of seeing it as a traveler rather than a tourist. Over the last two and a half years we’ve tried to avoid being tourists. We wanted to see Australia and meet Australians, rather than be herded around by hyperbolic money-making businesses. While some of our best experiences have been on tours when that was the only way to get there, e.g. the Bungle Bungles, Undara Lava Tubes and Lake Eyre in flood, we’ve got a greater sense of satisfaction by getting out into the bush ourselves and being more Dora the Explorer than I ever imagined. ... read more

Following are some of my old Pics. Apologies for the quality as most are photos of photos (yes Virginia, in the old days we only had film inside the camera). In most cases there are good quality pictures of the mushrooms and even some of the people next to them, but I like these sort of snaps. I also like the looks on the faces of people when first asked to pose with a fungi. Good sports all of them.... read more

Hi, everybody! We thoroughly enjoyed the Billabong Koala Recovery Centre near McQuarry Park in the Blue Mountains. We were given little cups of corn kernels to feed the animals and allowed to walk among the wallabies and kangaroos. Barry got a picture of one roo that had a gangly baby hanging out its pouch. There were birds, dingoes and reptiles, as well as the adorable-looking koalas. We were surprised at how fast the koalas walk. They're really bow-legged but they can really hurry along from one tree to another. After we left the Blue Mtns. we went through more beautiful country, this time filled with banana plantations. Then there were sugar cane plantations for miles and miles. The roads through many of the towns like Nambucca and Woolgooga and Grafton along the coast were just terrible, ... read more

18/05/09 Monday Day 276 After leaving Hervey Bay in beautiful conditions this morning, we had a quick look at the beach there. Nothing special. Then it was some 30k’s away to a place called Maryborough. This was where the Mary Popping Author came from and there’s a statue of Mary Popping there! For some reason I was expecting something huge. Instead it turned out to be the size of a normal person. Pretty neat though. Once we had that seen, we headed for Noosa and Noosa Heads. We were hoping to spend a day or two here relaxing but as soon as we were heading towards the place, the heavens opened….again! We had a quick look at Noosa, which is divided into smaller places, like Noosaville, Noosa Heads and Sunshine Beach to name a few. We ... read more

DAY 58 Up nice and early as usual, not quite watching the sun rise, but certainly giving me the quiet time I love. I managed to recall and type out most of the blog for yesterday, then ask mission control to edit it for me. Though she does not have any control over artistic licence (Note from Mrs T: that's what he thinks!). We got out just after 10.00 am and headed off in the truck as we wanted to go and see Montville, a place up in the mountains. It was a fantastic drive up through, Mooloolah, Eudlow, Palmsprings, then on to Montville, finishing off in Melany. On route we stopped at Baroon Pocket Dam for a while, It was the usual Australian Sunday setting, people cooking at the BBQ’s that are provided, kids swimming, ... read more

DAY 57 - 3rd January 2009 Today is Saturday, Derek and Karen are due back from their New Year excursion to Sydney. They were due back at around 4.00pm. We had a 10.30 appointment with the Chris and Michelle, Franki’s mother and stepfather. We know Franki from Starbucks in Mooloolaba, in our discussions a long time before Christmas, Frankie said her parents may want their house sitting for a period whilst the family are away in the UK, for her sisters wedding. We arrived at their house in the wooded suburbs of Caloundra, and were greeted by Franki’s mum, Michelle. Michelle is originally from Malvern, in Worcestershire and Chris from Gods own fair County of Warwickshire, he said he came from Selly Oak, and had worked on a Sainsbury’s that I did some of the electrical ... read more

DAY 56 2nd January 2009 Title(Seven, eights) Again it’s somewhat difficult to produce the blog for the 2nd January as not that much happened. We are somewhat restricted by our own acceptance that whilst looking after someone else’s animals, you can’t spend that much time away from the appointed property. What I do know is that we have been away 8 weeks today, that’s why we have given today’s blog the tag, (Eight Sevens). I hope you guys don’t think this just happens, these fancy tags, like beetle mania, they do take some thought you know. Anyway, you know the drill, get up, kettle on, let the dogs out, make tea, feed dogs, sit at laptop and do blog, for the day before, so its an accurate account of what has happened, warts and all. The ... read more

DAY 55 - 1st January 2009 - New Years Day! Well Happy New Year bloggers! I stumbled out of bed this morning, feeling very tired from our late night (early morning), that had to be the latest we have been to bed since being in Australia so we are not used to it. Andy and I had a great time at Ruth and Dave’s last night, it was great opportunity to relax and enjoy the company of and get to know other people too! Each person we meet along the way on our momentous journey, makes it that much more colourful. New Years day brings with it the enthusiasm to get back on the road. I had arranged a Skype session with one of my closest friends, Babs, as I knew she was having a small ... read more

DAY 54 31ST December 2008 (New Year’s Eve) Today waking up on the sunshine coast you can definitely feel the difference in the strength of the sun compared to Port Stevens, 10.00am and it was already very hot. Andy got out of bed fairly early as usual, tended to the needs of Moffy and Charlie and settled down at the Internet with a cup of tea. I got up at 8.00, as the day was already blistering, I jumped in the swimming pool to cool down a bit. In this heat the water is naturally heated so is not freezing cold when you get in, it is all the same refreshing. There was a knock on the door, hastily I went to the front door, anticipating that it was the parcel from England that we were ... read more
