Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Day 8 - Sun Aug 30 Day 2 on the Reef The second time I went out on the reef, I went with a boat called Passions of Paradise. It was a totally different vibe. Lots more people on the boat, but the snorkeling was infinitely better. Our first spot was Michaelmans' cove- a little island in the middle of the reef with spectacular coral and lots of fish! We were dropped off, via glass bottom boat, on the beach and got to walk into the water. The shallow water had coral growing right up out of the sand! The water [View Full Entry]

It's been quite the adventure leaving Brisbane. You can see a few pictures from our last days there before heading north to Cairns. A couple of the first pictures got a little out of order, but that will give you a little taste of the album! We flew up there as it was the quickest/cheapest option! We arrived to a wonderful hostel (you can see the sweet pictures) and just made ourselves at home in the tent. We enjoyed some time around the city during the arts festival and then we rented a car and drove for 3 days north and [View Full Entry]

Day 7 - Sat Aug 29 On the Wallaby I'm wandering around Cairns tonight and there is a guy with dreads sitting on a stoop playing acoustic guitar. He's singing amazing versions of "Brown Eyed Girl", "Redemption Song", and "you look wonderful tonight". I drop some money in his bag, and he says thank you in his beautiful Aussie accent. I'm sitting outside in shorts, a tank top and flip flops. It's warm with a cool breeze, and I am in heaven. The summer air is like a drug to me- makes me almost manic! It's somehow nostalgic of those long [View Full Entry]

DAY 295 Another weekend stretches ahead of us, the weeks go by so quickly I cannot believe it is Saturday already. It is a lovely cool morning, though the sun is starting to peep through the lush tropical surrounds. Andy brought me a cup of tea, but I was just lying in bed thinking so I thought I had better get up. What was I thinking about? England, friends, family etc. After a light breakfast of toast and marmite again, such luxury, Andy is keen to pop out to the local Nissan Dealer this morning we need to pick up [View Full Entry]

DAY 294 I cannot believe how well I have slept again, if I drank Hot Chocolate before bedtime I would think that someone is slipping something into it, when the morning comes it is hard to come round. Andy brought me a cup of tea, but I got out of bed and joined him in the kitchen, where he was sat making a list of things to do, oops a reality check that as we are in one place for the moment we have chores that need doing. No rush but just handy to get some of them off the [View Full Entry]

I got the job! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City
I got the job at the Italian restaurant!! It is in the centre of Cairns right on the sea front. I started on Tuesday and really enjoyed it, although it was hard work. I had to do a mad dash to the shops to buy some black trousers and shoes. This proved to be quite difficult. All of the trousers were far too long and they don’t do my shoe size. In the end I had to buy long trousers and some black shiny kid’s shoes. The shoes were a big mistake and I ended up with blisters. So for shift [View Full Entry]

The next stop after Airlie beach was a long 7 hour drive north and the town of Mission Beach. To be honest, it could have been the most awful place I’d ever been and I doubt I would have noticed, what with still being on cloud 9 and all But as it happened it was a really cute little town. I put the emphasis on little here because there was no more than 15 shops in the town and about 8 of those were cafes! We still managed to while away the afternoon browsing in the little shops and eating the [View Full Entry]

DAY 293 It was nice and cool and not quite light, it was our first morning waking up in a house, the first in a long while, well since end of April when we spent a week in Perth, we have both been looking forward to this, even though Andy is keen on spending a night or two out camping while we are here anyway. I am not sure what time it was Andy had already sneaked out of bed, it seems that I usually wake up when Andy gets out of bed in the trailer, yet I never event noticed [View Full Entry]
