Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Barron Gorge
Taken from Wrights Lookout just at the beginning of our walk.
DAY 307 After all the fantastic information we had received from Ann at QPWS (Queensland Parks & Wildlife Services), and doing the Copperlode Dam walk the other day, see blog day 304 07 09 2009 (Copperlode Dam to Crystal Cascades) we wanted to get some more walks in, so had loosely decided on a walk that started at Wrights Lookout, just beyond the Barron Falls Lookout, and went on to the McDonalds track. The information said it was a 4.7 Kilometer walk each way, to the Douglas track, and is a historic track (we are not certain why so historic). Approximately [View Full Entry]

I hope you are all well and enjoyed the summer holidays and now ready for the new school year! I was thinking of you all on the day you went back to school. As many of you already know from reading my blog over the summer I had a fantastic time in Thailand and am now in Northern Australia in a city called Cairns. I am working at an Italian restaurant called La Pizza, which is on the beach. It took me a long time to get used to carrying all the trays and pizzas and one day I nearly dropped [View Full Entry]

DAY 306 For some strange reason I was up at silly O’clock this morning and I don’t know why, but typing the blog retrospectively we try to make mental notes, or written notes, but for the life of me I cannot remember what was on my mind yesterday morning, except that neither of us had a good nights sleep, we felt a little deflated yesterday so I think it just remains on my mind. We had an invitation this morning to go and have coffee with Pamela and Terry up at their splendid hillside pad up at Palm Cove, we need [View Full Entry]

DAY 305 Andy was up before me this morning (nothing unusual there then!), I expected my muscles to be a little bit sore after yesterdays hike from Copperlode Dam to Crystal Cascades and back again, but no, we both feel absolutely fine. I don’t think we are going to have a lot to write about today as today is more about sorting out our future here rather than the tourist bit. We had an introduction to a local agency to help us with looking for work in the Cairns area or at least in the Tropical North Queensland, so Andy spoke [View Full Entry]

DAY 304 Far from having those Monday morning Blues, I woke up, jumped out of bed and put the kettle on, today we were finally going to walk the trail from Copperlode Dam to Crystal Cascades. Before Caroline was up, I had made the sandwiches, filled the camelbak, got the boots, together made sure the first aid kit was in the rucksack, well walking with Caroline can be hazardous. verything was done, Caroline had had her morning tea, and so after a light breakfast we were in the truck and heading up the mountain towards Copperlode Dam. About the walk [View Full Entry]

DAY 303 Again it was out intention that today Sunday we were going to do a big walk, but as we did not get in from a fantastic night out last night until after 2.30 am, we struggled to move our lazy backsides out of bed. Caroline was up first and brought me tea in bed, how wonderful it was after all it is usually my duty, but today it was my turn. We didn’t really come around until about 10.00am and lolled around the house really enjoying the Sunday that we had. After the papers were scoured through and [View Full Entry]

G'day. What is crazy... casually but potentially dangerously weaving through traffic at will to cross the road or pressing a button and having to wait to cross even if the road is empty because of the fear of an illogical fine? Or, pavements with gaping holes and signs overhanging that pavement which are likely to rip your head off or a culture where people are suffocated by a blanket of safety and can blame someone else for their own idiocy and lack of attention thereby relinquishing all personal responsibility and people live in fear of being sued? Or that a commodity [View Full Entry]

All dressed up for a "Normal evening"
DAY 302 Oh Saturday morning, what bliss. Hang on a moment what am I saying? Everyday is like Saturday for us, although you do still get that Saturday feeling, maybe its being in a real house that does it, some kind of normality that kicks in those normal emotions, I always remember thinking how great Saturday mornings are with the whole weekend stretching out ahead of you and 2 whole days of no work. Not long after getting up I hear a noise outside, it is fairly loud but difficult to describe, I look out the window and see a rope [View Full Entry]

DAY 301 I have no idea what time I got out of bed this morning, except that Andy was out before me and I did have a cup of tea brought to me. The weather had improved on yesterday, that is to say that today has not started with rain. Our, what by now is becoming, a usual morning routine is complete, but one thing is on my mind today and is very pressing. A while ago when we were in Katherine, well it all seems such a while ago now anyway, I spent the afternoon burning discs, I know, [View Full Entry]
