Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

you knew this one was coming...
Hello everyone! We have returned safe and sound from our three day adventure on the Santa Maria. We fared much better than the SS Minnow (Gilligans Island). There is so much to report!! Our last meal ashore, we went to a restaurant in Cairns that served the "Hop, Skip, Swim, Hump" (or something like that). It consisted of kangaroo, crocodile, ostrich, and camel steaks with vegetables. (YUMMY). Three crew members - cap't Ron, Divemaster Phil, and sailor/hostess Jackie - set us sail east towards Thetford reef (a part of the great barrier reef). It took a little while for us to [View Full Entry]

I know everyone needs to plan before they go on a trip, but I'm starting to wonder when enough is enough. Does not chaos theory throw all planning out the window anyway. Oh well, not to bother. I have my list of stuff to buy now, about 40 to do items (all of which are important), and about 8 weeks to go before I head off to South America and Canada. Oh yeah, that's the point of all this! An around the world ticket for 5 continents, 12 month working VISA for Canada and a Finnish (EU) passport should give this [View Full Entry]

The first day! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
We got here! Arrived very early in the morning into Cairns international airport today. Got in around 5.30 after the 3650 mile journey from Tokyo which in turn was 6220 miles from London. Kate found suspicion with the quarantine people after the cutest dog in the world put its little paw on her luggage. Clearly she had some kind of illicit fruit!! Seemingly the little dog was in for a bit of a kicking after it turned out she had nothing on her at all (though later we did discover an empty KitKat wrapper so maybe it was on to something!) hey stl blog team(i.e. Liza) So i have completed my labour on the boat and now i am on my way to being dive certified. Today I learned the basic of the gear, bouyancy and such in a pool. This was supplemented with classes, lecture, and videos. All very nice and informative. There really is quite a lot to know before even thinking about jumping out to see. It looks as though i will be able to have an underwater camera so perhaps some hip pictures may result. Thats all for now. talk to you later(liza). [View Full Entry]

Anywho, i am 3 days deep into my boat work experience and it is bruising hard. i know you must be thinking...o shut up brad...living in austrlaia...but i aint kiddin. This is seriously the hardest work i have ever done. It is a bit difficult to describe what i have been doing....the basic scrubbing and painting is constantly happening all around in awkward places...but the real stinker is putting what are called balists in what is called a bilge. A balist is a gold bar looking stone [View Full Entry]

holler! welcome to the blog chris! good to hear from ya. so i have had some fun in the last few days. Lara and i, with some newly made aussie friends went to Fitzroy island...which is a sort of beautiful luxary island off the coast of Cairns. We went snorkeling around the reef and saw lots of colorful exotic fish and coral. Then we hiked up to the summit of the island a dandy 360 view of surrounding islands. to finish off the day we relaxed on Nudey beach. Yes, this was a nude beach. no i didnt strip down. by [View Full Entry]

yip yip yippEEE SO i have had a splendiferous weekend. It started at a campus bar called Stingers....where all the hot college co-eds hang to get drunk. That night was a special "Rocky horror picture show" evening...with live band and an end of school year crowd. Being the transvestite wanna-be that i am, i decked myself out in one of Lara's hot black skirts, tight black tops, and yummy stuffffed bra...and all the proper goth makeup as well. I was lookin fine. Lara also dressed similar, one could even say, lesbian-like similar. fortunatly there were plenty of others also decked out [View Full Entry]

I would'nt say i was dissapointed in cairns, i felt a little under the weather because we knew that our East coast tour is ending here and that everybody we have met long the way are going their seperate ways - Darwin, Thailand, USA, UK.... plus coming from the Whitsundays and Fraser island, cairns is really not that pretty, especially as the sea front is nothing more than a mud bath. Nevertheless we decided it would be best to purchase one of those vintage 5 litre Stanley wine boxes drink it and go sample the nightlife. Cairns nightlife! wow. its maddness [View Full Entry]
