Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

An overcast day Cairns is a touristy town Real humid outside Today was a pretty uneventful day. I cruised around Cairns a bit and ended up going to the mall because I wanted to post some stuff that I don't need any longer but can't bear to throw out. Sending stuff by seamail is relatively inexpensive. I think I ended up sending about 3.5 kilograms home for about $35. Mind you it will take about 8 to 12 weeks to arrive but no worries since I won't be home until about November! I hung out with my dorm mate Lynn. There [View Full Entry]

Cape Tribulation Still northward bound for the day Daintree Village too. This’ll just be a quick entry. I've fallen behind yet again since I haven't been online for an entire week! There is so much to "report" but too little time to type it all up. In short, I have seen and done lots of things since saying goodbye to Ann and Rob outside of the YHA in Brisbane last Wednesday. Currently in Cairns and will be here for a few more days before making my way towards the Centre of Australia. Three weeks in Australia already...boy the time is flying [View Full Entry]

Last day East Coast Pass Crocodiles & Bungy Jumps The Woolshed at Night. It was a full bus going from Mission Beach to Cairns and one REALLY long day because of one not too tactful and oh so drunk girl named Lisa. It was really disappointing since yesterday's small bus load was really nice with all of us getting along pretty nicely. I don't really care to waste my time and energy writing about Lisa and how she made the day on the bus ride seem extra long. Plus it is much better to tell stories like this in person as [View Full Entry]

First of all: as promised, here are pictures of somebody's kids snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and some family of perma-grinners sailing through the Whitsunday Islands. Left Airlie Beach and made the trek up to Cairns ("Cans" - apparently the i and r are silent to Aussies). Turns out we spent a lot of our time in Australia driving. I must say the driving habits of Aussies are amazingly good. There is no tailgating to speak of and almost everybody does the speed limit. Drivers regularly stop for pedestrians standing at crosswalks. Most drivers seem not to realize that their [View Full Entry]

I LOVE DIVING!! It is such an unreal feeling to be down there, water all around you, yet you breath! Fish swimming around you, turtles looking for food, Nemo hiding in the anemone, achieving neutral buoyancy and floating like an astronaut in outer space! Oh the freedom! Arrived in Cairns Friday 13th May and met up with my baby girl Alys! We spent the day together before I went on the boat on the Saturday. Three days on the boat, and ten dives! That makes three and four dives a day! *phew* After that I was exhausted! Started with the deep [View Full Entry]

Froggy :)
