Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I booked the famous Uncle Brian's tour to the Atherton Tablelands for Tuesday. Some explanations: the Atherton Tablelands are an very green, rainforest, waterfalls and lakes area just outside of Cairns. The famous uncle Brian's tour is... well you'll read about it in a moment. I was picked up by Gus and cousin Paul in the morning. Gus is our bus for today, a bus with a soul of its own, and cousin Paul is our guide. The weather was awful - rainy and coldish, not at all what you wish for a day of lakes and waterfalls where you want [View Full Entry]

On Monday I went to Kuranda, a small village on the mountains just outside of Cairns. The village is so commercialized that it was really boring, but on the way I did some exciting things. The first place I visited was an Aboriginal Culture park called Tjapukai. They call it "culture park" and not culture center and probably for a good reason - it does feel a bit like Disney, except for one very strong film about the sad history of the Tjapukai tribe since the white man arrived to this land. But this was the last thing I saw there [View Full Entry]

....it being romance. i don't know, you've got to wonder how i can fuck up so monuMentally and staggeringly consistently. i guess i behaved foolishly, an emotional hi-jack really. sure there was reciprocation, but there was also a boyfriend back home, ambivalent though he may have been. still, i resurrected that good feeling with her. the one that courses through your veins like thin fire; waking and bringing that gentle excitement and pleasure to all those sleeping parts. quietly revelling in the anticipation, warmth, illuminated smiles and all that jazz. a palpable shared understanding th [View Full Entry]

day 2 - my new flatmates who shall from now on be known affectionately as 'the kids' are conquering their innate fear of the aged and beginning to engage me in conversation. the trick i have learned, like ickle infants, is to place yourself somewhere close to the ground and wait....and sure as blazes they'll come to you. when i approached them they tended to tremble and mutter incomprehensibly with intimidation and insecurity, which naturally i would pick up on and share - me being the empath that i am - but, i confess, this would often leave me uncertain as [View Full Entry]

After a way-too-early early morning flight (with a Jewish French couple on their honeymoon sitting next to me - we had a really very interesting conversation about Israel, France, antisemitism, media and more), I arrived to Cairns. I was tired and just wanted to go to sleep, but after a short nap I went to town and spoiled myself with a great salad in a cafe. Cairns offers plenty of temptations and I so I spent the day shopping around for tours, reading my Rough Guide and planning the next days. In the evening I went downtown again with some guys [View Full Entry]

cairns - overpriced, cloudy, rainy, cold and with an economy flourishing only because of it's lowest common denominator and bums-on-seats marketing (over-)drive. what ever was once 'special' about this place has been over-developed and thus dissipated with an impressively mercenary zeal. there is no adventuring to be had, nothing remains unspoiled save parts of the tropical rainforest itself....as long as you don't mind the 'skyrail' cable cars whirring overhead. i recommend two days maximum in cairns during which time you can easily snorkel or dive, skyrail, tandem parachute jump, bungee jump [View Full Entry]

We got back from Cairns (pronounced Cans) yesterday and that was without a doube the best vacation ever! First of all Carins is much smaller than Sydney and we stayed right in the center of town, so we could walk anywhere in under ten minutes. It si very mush a back[packers town as well, everyone was our age which was nice, we could be louder and things (as Americans tend to be). It felt liek Flordia, since it was warm, looked tropical and was right on the water. Dana, Doud, Mindi, Linzy and I booked a four day package that provide [View Full Entry]

G'day everyone! I hope you are all doing well and having a great summer! I had the most amazing weekend! I went to Cairns which is in Queensland, northern Australia. I arrived Wednesday night and stayed in my first hostel. It was a room with three bunkbeds and a bathroom. There were five of us in a group that travelled together so we had a different person staying with us each night we were there. We had two roommates from England and one from New York so that was interesting. On Thursday we went white water rafting in the Tully river. [View Full Entry]

Daintree Thursday morning we headed north along Cook’s Highway a winding coastal road that meanders through the beautiful palm strewn tropical ecosystems of North Queensland. We took a slight detour to the sleepy tourist town of Port Douglas. There was a gorgeous little church there with a huge window at the ocean side in giving the parishioners a breath taking view of the eye-catching vista’s of Port Douglas. The streets were lined with boutique shops and mom and pop tucker shops. We snapped a few photos grabbed a smoothie and were on our way again. Our destination was Cap [View Full Entry]
