Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hello from the sunny and rainy climates of Cairns! Arrived here on Wednesday from Alice Springs. First thing I saw as I stepped off the plane was mountains covered in rainforest and the sun setting behind them with a lovely red glow. Noticed while driving to the hostel that Cairns has a lot of bars, hostels, bars and hostels! The night life here is quite good but there's not much else to do. It's like Alice Springs people come here to stay the night before heading up North to Cape Tribulation or the Great Barrier Reef. But saying that it's a [View Full Entry]

We spent a long weekend in Cairns planning our next moves, partying (after a top night in the "Woolshed" Emma braved her first ever Falafel Kebab!), shopping, using vouchers to get free backpacker grub and exploring the town in the rain. We also arranged first to join a 3-day adventure bus tour right through the Queensland and Northern Territory outback to Alice Springs (Desert Venturer), and then after a day of rest to join an 8-day camping adventure tour right through some of the most remote places in the world down to Adelaide in South Australia (Wayward Bus - Face the [View Full Entry]

Starting Out! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
So far I have made a rough guess at places I want to see in Australlia thus far. I haven't bothered to put the amount of time besides each that I will stay as I honestly have no idea how big they are or what there is to do in each place. I want to make sure I don't miss out on anything on my travels so will stay as long as it takes in each place to see what there is and do everything I can (both physically and financially). So far this is what I have got. London > [View Full Entry]

Hello everybody, So, with the last few group emails i've sent out, i think i started out by saying,"....it's been a while", or ".....long time no write" or something equally witty to all of that. The reality of it is that staying put and just working and living doesn't give entertaining material to write about, unless you want to hear about me taking a spontaneous walk to the airport while severely intoxicated (it happened....), or how my buddy's and i would walk around spitting out random lines from "Anchorman" and have a good laugh; funny to us, but not really too [View Full Entry]

YAD. Yet another Digression. Were there a World Championships in Bandwagon Jumping I'm sure the good people of England would stroll it this year, as they would have back on 22 November 2003, when for once our little '53rd state' actually won something. Hooray. My greatest sadness watching the current Ashes series is that we're watching it with my cousin James and his wife Heather. Through many years of Australia stuffing England's cricketers into a small box and sending them packing they showed admirable restraint and gloated very little, at least in our hearing. Now it seems unfair and probab [View Full Entry]

This will be the last installment from Australia as we leave tomorrow to go to New Zealand. We are sad to be leaving as have had a fantastic time, but looking forward to NZ. Cairns: We have been here (and around) for nearly 2 weeks. In taht time we visited the Atherton tablelands, where we were very active doing canoeing (night and day), mountain bike riding (12km) and eating strawberries. we also did some walks in the rainforest and visited 3 waterfalls. we went on a platypus spotting trip and saw a couple (a little far off unfortunately). we painted our [View Full Entry]

Undara After a really nice drive up to the tableands we stopped at the Cathedral Fig Tree, Lake Bareen, Lake Eacham and then headed to Undara, which was a great "outback experience". Because Undara is so far away (4 hours west of Cairns) it was mainly filled with retirees and their campervans who were touring around Australia. Always being last in line for everything (the oldies always get there early), we enjoyed some kangaroo for dinner and toured the lava tubes in the morning. We then successfully avoided the road trains and roadkill (including a huge wild boar) on the way [View Full Entry]

It's 28 degrees in the middle of winter, the seas are safe to swim in, and it's not too wet - yup, it's peak tourist season here in Cairns. In our first couple of days we headed up north to Cape Tribulation with Nakia and Cas. Cas went for a swim at Port Douglas only to discover after that the estuary was croc-infested (hmm, maybe the seas aren't that safe to swim in!). After checking in to PKs resort, we quickly found the beach then the bar. We headed to a couple of nice cold water holes, went ocean kayaking and [View Full Entry]

I spent a week and a half in Cairns and the area. Some days were packed with adventures and travels, and some days were passed in leisure in Cairns itself. I stayed in a great hostel, really the level of New Zealand hostels and that is rare in Australia. The room is only for 3 people, and the bathrooms look like something you would want to have at home, and the great garden, kitchens, the small pool - I could stay there much longer just doing nothing. Spending time in leisure means several things. Of course, I sometimes spend hours in [View Full Entry]
