Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hello Everyone, We both now have jobs, Heather is working retail, Canterbury, that sells all the Rugby Jersey's. I am working in a pub, PJ O'Briens, just as a bottle monkey. Our friend have left us, the 2 Germans and a New Zealander have started travelling down the East coast. We plan to meet up with them in Sydney around Christmas. Our Apartment is awesome...much like a condo. fully furnished...Our home [View Full Entry]

Hey, Had a really lovely few days in Carins, which is sort of a big seaside town. First day spent down by the 'lagoon' which is sort of a beach substitute cos the beach is a bit like western-super-mud if youve ever been there. But the lagoon is a lovely big salt water swimming pool where everyone hangs out- I bumped into two lots of fellow hosteller there and we spent the day getting slowly roasted together. In the evening I met up with Sharon again and we went back to her hostel and cooked. The next day I went up [View Full Entry]

Yes here I am in Queensland and its SUN SUN SUN , oh YES! My hostel is out of town but beautiful- little, like, tree house bunks and cute little hand painting on the walls and stuff. Had ozzie BBQ last night which included crocodile and kangaroo! Crocodile tasted like... guess what- chicken - but skippy was more like fillet steak- ummmmm. Everyone was getting a bit drunk and the drinking games were about to start so I went upstairs and hung out with another group watching a movie. Most are Brits aged 21-23. Sweet guy called Luke from Nottingham just [View Full Entry]

RAFTING today!!!!! Woke up last night at 2am because the fire alarm was going off, marvellous! So not much sleep for the lizard :-( We had such a fantastic time white water rafting today, it was so much fun, i think it's the best day out we've had all along the east coast .. We had a Scottish raft "guide", Chris, and we were in a raft with 7 really nice English lads. I thought I'd spend the whole time in the water but actually only one guy fell in, the only time we all fell in was when they made [View Full Entry]

Hello from the sunny and rainy climates of Cairns! Arrived here on Wednesday from Alice Springs. First thing I saw as I stepped off the plane was mountains covered in rainforest and the sun setting behind them with a lovely red glow. Noticed while driving to the hostel that Cairns has a lot of bars, hostels, bars and hostels! The night life here is quite good but there's not much else to do. It's like Alice Springs people come here to stay the night before heading up North to Cape Tribulation or the Great Barrier Reef. But saying that it's a [View Full Entry]

We spent a long weekend in Cairns planning our next moves, partying (after a top night in the "Woolshed" Emma braved her first ever Falafel Kebab!), shopping, using vouchers to get free backpacker grub and exploring the town in the rain. We also arranged first to join a 3-day adventure bus tour right through the Queensland and Northern Territory outback to Alice Springs (Desert Venturer), and then after a day of rest to join an 8-day camping adventure tour right through some of the most remote places in the world down to Adelaide in South Australia (Wayward Bus - Face the [View Full Entry]

Starting Out! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
So far I have made a rough guess at places I want to see in Australlia thus far. I haven't bothered to put the amount of time besides each that I will stay as I honestly have no idea how big they are or what there is to do in each place. I want to make sure I don't miss out on anything on my travels so will stay as long as it takes in each place to see what there is and do everything I can (both physically and financially). So far this is what I have got. London > [View Full Entry]
