Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well the road trip is now over :( it was the best 3 weeks ever. Here is just an update on what happened since last time. Day 12 - Airlie Beach The today was well good - we swam down at the lagoon and layed in the sun for a while. My tan had finally started to get better :) yay! That evening we had didgeridoo lessons which was so funny. I actually managed to play it quite well. After that we went and got ready, had a cold shower, had a BBQ, then headed for the clubs. Lake Barrine, Australia After being trapped in a tin can (ship) for two weeks, I finally made it to Australia. On my first day of touring the area around Cairns, I went to Lake Barrine. It was a very picturesque place. When my tour group arrived, it was still early morning so we went into the inn for morning scones and devonshire tea. It was delicious. The scones were freshly baked and had jam and whipped cream on them. I gobbled mine up without thinking twice. Since it was wintertime in Australia, it was pretty brisk outside so the tea helped [View Full Entry]

Atherton Tablelands and the Great Divide, Queensland, Australia After leaving Lake Barrine, I traveled through the Atherton Tablelands. This area is primarily farming and dairy country in Australia. It reminded me a lot of England's rural areas....but seeing dairy cows standing under palm trees tipped me off that this wasn't the English countryside! Based on what my tour guide said, the Tablelands was pretty much a rain forest until just after WWII. After the war, many veterans bought land and started clearing out the trees in order to start farming. There were several places [View Full Entry]

Australian Outback and Banana Plantation I had lunch at a cattle ranch in the outback. Steak, salad, tea, and fruit salad. Yum! I also got to hold a joey (baby kangaroo). I guess these people were bring it up to be their pet. Kind of crazy if you ask me...I'd rather have a dog. The joey was cute but it's claws scared me a bit because they were pretty big. I then went to a banana plantation. I was given a quick synopsis of how bananas are grown and harvested...it sounded like it was really labor intensive. I then went and [View Full Entry]

Just a quick note to those who are trying to keep track of where we are -- the best way to reach us is through Cairns City Backpacker Hostel in Cairns. Tomorrow we are going on a one and a half day tour to Cape Tribulation and we'll be staying at a beach house there. However, after that we'll be back in Cairns for the duration... [View Full Entry]

We went on two reef trips, very different. The first was a small boat, a refurbished pearl-lugger built in 1954, with 13 passengers and a crew of 6. The second was a larger, faster boat built for reef trips, with 120 passengers and a crew of 6. The first trip was on the 28th. The boat goes to the inner reef, where both coral and fish are not as impressive. Jershon and I signed up for the introductory scuba lesson. I don't know if lesson is really the right word -- mostly they hold your hand (1 dive master, 2 students) [View Full Entry]

Well, this is probably my last blog entry before Canada! Since winter has set in, life has been a little less hectic and a little more relaxed. So, let’s see, April and May....visiting with friends and family, Mudgee Wine and Food Festival in Manly, I bought a sewing machine!!, found a yoga class and a friend to go with, said bon voyage to good friends Dale and Samina who are off on a year long adventure somewhere in Asia-Pacific, I shook the hand of a famous cricket player Glenn McGrath at the Wharf Bar (not that I knew who he was [View Full Entry]

"It's not even possible to say quite where the outback is. To Australians anything vaguely rural is "the bush". At some indeterminate point "the bush" becomes "the outback". Push on for another 2,000 miles or so and eventually you come to the bush again, and then a city, and then the sea. And that's Australia." 22 Jun - the above quote from Bill Bryson in his book Down Under is so appropriate about my adventures here in Australia! G'day from Oz. Hope you are all well. I haven't been in touch for AGES as it's soooo hectic here in Australia. [View Full Entry]
