Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Arrived into Cairns last Thursday evening and was completely disorientated when I got off the bus. Couldn't find any Australian people, even shop assistants where all Japanese. Shop signs etc all in Japanese as well......weird ! Eventually found a local who gave us directions to our accommodation: Southern Cross Atrium Apartements. A hostel double room was gonna be about $80 and got a studio in this joint for $90, and it is lovely. 3 swimming pools, a gym, satellite TV in room......English Premiership on all night !! Hey everyone, I am behind the bar...pouring drinks, mastering the Guiness clover...Everything is awesome and the BEST staff discount I have ever had, they treat Heather like an employee.... I hate hearing about the Leafs doing poorly, but its tough to be mad when it has been +30C since we have been here, and its is only Spring. I don't have to worry about cleaning off snow, cold temps., etc...LOL Heather is well, finding retail a little slow, looking forward t a teaching job or bartending... Love to read the replys and talk to you all soon, Neil and Heather [View Full Entry]

Hi from Cairns! I finished up my week in Sydney, visiting the Blue Mountains, the Featherdale Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Sydney Opera House to see a couple of shows. The Blue Mountains run close to the east coast of Australia . . .the most famous landmark is the Three Sisters rock formation (originally, seven sisters but erosion has offed four of them). Featherdale is also just west of Sydney . . . you can hold some of the animals and view them interacting with other species. The koalas get manhandled the most, of course, and I felt bad for them, being [View Full Entry]

Cairns is amazing, absolute paradise. There is so much to explore in this part of the world... I have been to Undersea world, a beautiful aqaurium. I have fluttered with the butterfly's at the sancturary and am trying to figure out which tour to go on next. This city is a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree rainforest. Not to mention I can scoot out to the outback and am not too far away from the Crocodile Hunter's territory. The town is alive every night. It is considered to be a great Australian party town and it has [View Full Entry]

(Dave writes)... Well, we're in Cairns and have just about enough time to catch our breath after a hectic few week's travelling. Our last entry was in Byron Bay, after we're been camping in the outback. A lot has happened since then! Byron was ok, the highlight there was our first surfing lesson. We were absolutely stunned as within half an hour we were both standing upright and riding the waves! Turns out the harder part initially is actually catching the waves, but with an instructor to give you a push it is surprisingly easy! We then got a greyhound ticket [View Full Entry]

Went out on the Quiksilver boat to the Great Barrier Reef today with 2 girls from my dorm... Did 3 amazing dives, the best one being when we circled a huge column of reef with so many fish and coral around it, it was spectacular and every time you went round you noticed something different. Also saw some giant clams and proper Nemo fish, which are actually quite rare. Then cruised back to Cairns as the sun was going down, it was an absolutely fabulous day and I loved every minute of it.
