Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Day 16 - Cains Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
I've spent most of the day travelling here from Brisbane and in about an hour I'll be taking off on a boat for 4 days for scuba. I'm really excited about it. The only problem is that it's overcast today. I hope it doesn't stay that way the whole time I'm out on the boat. Only time will tell. [View Full Entry]

Okay.......we we're going to fillout this travel blog as we travelled - but we have been having so much fun along the way that we have not wanted to go into internet cafes that often!! Our travels so far have taken us from London to Brisbane to Hervey Bay to Bunderburg to Mackay to The Whitsundays to Ayr (diving the Yongala wreck) to Mission Beach and finally to Cairns & the Coral Sea / Barrier Reef. In our cruise control hire-car we drove 2,500km in total, which is a TINY bit of the big trip planned for next year! Tomorrow we [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Cairns at 4.30am on a very sunny morning, and tried very hard to catch a few hours sleep on the benches at the airport until 8.30 when we could get a complimentary bus to our guesthouse. Lisa's luggage had been left in Perth so we couldn't do much that morning until her backpack was delivered later. We were pretty shattered after only 2 hours sleep so we didn't do much on our first day. We stayed at Tropic Days, a guesthouse owned by an Australian and his Irish wife. It was a lovely Queensland style house with very [View Full Entry]

After recovering from Jetlag at my uncles place in Manly ... i finally had my tour organized and got on the plane direction Cairns..... wohooo! The first day I went out to the outer Reef for my first open water Diving! It was awesome... saw heapsa of fish stingrays and i even found NEMO ! My underwater camera was one of those throw away ones so i didn't catch him that well.... Met Ebony on the boat. After hours of diving and snorkeling we relaxed with a cold vodka lemon on the deck. Due to all the diving an snorkelling I [View Full Entry]

Originally I planned to arrive in Airlie Beach and book myself on to a boat trip leaving the next day so I'd have time to visit a few more places up the coast afterwards, but I got a little side tracked by sun and beer and the chance to relax after the camping trip and bus journeys. I largely blame Andy, Rich (both from Bristol) and Kirk (from Canada) for my inertia, my excessive beer drinking and my continual pie eating that have been the main activities I've indulged in since arriving in Airlie. But I also have to credit them [View Full Entry]

Got it! :D Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Yeah, I got both the necklace and earrings and the shoes, so now I've spent a quarter of the money I've saved up for this... But we've only got a little more than a week left, so it's not like it's a problem :) After I'd finished my shopping and dad finished uploading we headed off to Cairns. On the way we saw some beautiful giant strangler figs on the way from Atherton, and crater lakes and other nature sites up on the table lands. It's all very unique and anyone going to Australia and the Cairns area should definitely spend [View Full Entry]

The final stop on our Greyhound bus ticket. We decided not to go much further north than this because it's already sweltering and frankly we've probably been to enough rainforest and beach without going any further. Fortunately at least the remaining countries on our trip shouldn't have too much of those ...doh. Oh well, at least there's plenty to do. We started off by going for a dive on the outer reef. Having been told that our 'half' diving qualification wouldn't count for much we were relieved to discover that we were allowed to go on a normal guided dive rather [View Full Entry]

Had a good couple of days in Darwin and enjoyed the nightlife. Apparently I was in the same bar as the actor Hugh Jackman (not exactly sure who that is!). Oh well. Then headed to Cairns where I spent the last five nights. Enjoyed a mad daytrip by Uncle Brian's tour company where we were all singing and dancing with a toy Elmo?! Did get to see some sights as well including Babinda boulders, Josephine Falls and Milla Milla Falls where they filmed the Timotei advert from a few years ago. It was great fun rock sliding until one girl knocked [View Full Entry]
