Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

13th December 2005 Hiya Folks, We decided to go for the day to the Blue Mountains. So after a a small breakfast we set off for Kings Cross Station, just minutes walk away from the Hotel and bought 2 return tickets to Katoomba. Sounds like something out of the Lion King that song, what was it? "Hakuna matata" thats it ,well this is Katoomba Matata. Anyway the ticket included a bus tour as well a sort of hop on, hop off arrangement. The train left at 11 am and so we set off through all the outer suburbs of Sydney, the [View Full Entry]

Hiya Folks, Well we have now arrived in Queensland, well just a couple of hour ago actually and settled into our Hotel The Comfort Inn Queenslander, a perfect base with good clean accommodation and "heaven" 2 swimming pools and Jaccuzzi. And as they have their own internet room, thought I would relay a brief extract of my notes on the bridge walk in Sydney, so here goes. 12th December 2005 Woke up to a glorious cloudless sky, ideal for the bridge walk. It is a particularly poignant day for me as 10 years ago my Dad passed away so it seems [View Full Entry]

Farewell Cairns Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Where to start? Sorry we haven't added much lately... As I write this I am a little emotional...a little from the booze, a little beacuse I just clocked off and took my PJ's jersy off for the last time. In the last three weeks, we actually did touristy stuff. We did the "Kuranda/Skyrail" , which the bar was nice enough to cover...Basically, we took a glorified ski lift over the rainforest. We stopped a different locations along the way to learn about the area and take some of the most beautiful photos. Waterfalls like you wouldn't believe. Kuranda is a "little [View Full Entry]

We came to Cairns to do a diving course and get some sun. And so we did. Cairns itself is a city full of tourists and not much else. The beach next to Cairns is no good for swimming because of jelly fishes and crocodiles but there is a nice lagoon style swimming pool next to the beach. Although there's not much to see in Cairns the surroundings are spectacular with the great barrier reef, many beaches, rainforests and national parks. We booked a four day open water diving course from Cairns Dive Center. It had been recommended for us and [View Full Entry]

Day 16 - Cains Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
I've spent most of the day travelling here from Brisbane and in about an hour I'll be taking off on a boat for 4 days for scuba. I'm really excited about it. The only problem is that it's overcast today. I hope it doesn't stay that way the whole time I'm out on the boat. Only time will tell. [View Full Entry]

Okay.......we we're going to fillout this travel blog as we travelled - but we have been having so much fun along the way that we have not wanted to go into internet cafes that often!! Our travels so far have taken us from London to Brisbane to Hervey Bay to Bunderburg to Mackay to The Whitsundays to Ayr (diving the Yongala wreck) to Mission Beach and finally to Cairns & the Coral Sea / Barrier Reef. In our cruise control hire-car we drove 2,500km in total, which is a TINY bit of the big trip planned for next year! Tomorrow we [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Cairns at 4.30am on a very sunny morning, and tried very hard to catch a few hours sleep on the benches at the airport until 8.30 when we could get a complimentary bus to our guesthouse. Lisa's luggage had been left in Perth so we couldn't do much that morning until her backpack was delivered later. We were pretty shattered after only 2 hours sleep so we didn't do much on our first day. We stayed at Tropic Days, a guesthouse owned by an Australian and his Irish wife. It was a lovely Queensland style house with very [View Full Entry]

After recovering from Jetlag at my uncles place in Manly ... i finally had my tour organized and got on the plane direction Cairns..... wohooo! Originally I planned to arrive in Airlie Beach and book myself on to a boat trip leaving the next day so I'd have time to visit a few more places up the coast afterwards, but I got a little side tracked by sun and beer and the chance to relax after the camping trip and bus journeys. I largely blame Andy, Rich (both from Bristol) and Kirk (from Canada) for my inertia, my excessive beer drinking and my continual pie eating that have been the main activities I've indulged in since arriving in Airlie. But I also have to credit them [View Full Entry]
