Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hey all . sorry ive been really shit about my blog lately but been way busy and have hardly been back at Claires place. So dont know where I was but some highlights of last week include going out for Claires birthday dressed up 80's, seeing my cousin Kim and spending the day with her, seeing more statues and tourist attractions, attending the cricket and finally sealing every intention of ever drinking cheap wine again (yuck), going to Newcastle with Claire and seeing the koalas and Claire getting her license. Kareoke with Elise and Claire where we totally embaressed ourselves by [View Full Entry]

After our Whitsundays trip, we didn't think anything could compare to it. So we headed up the coast to our final destination on the east coast which was Cairns. Cairns is basically the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, so we were all so excited to see this famous landmark. We were there for two days and had two different tours booked. the first one was for Cape Tribulation, which is a rainforest (that meets the reef). We drove up there and went on some beautiful hikes around the cape, it was really cool. Our last day was a boat trip [View Full Entry]

Quirky Factsheet No 3! The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef and spans more than 2000km of Queensland's coastline. It is the only living thing on Earth that can be seen from space. Tropical North Queensland is the only place in the world where two World Heritage Sites - the Reef and the Tropical Rainforest - share a border. "Finding Nemo" wasn't totally accurate...Clownfish all start off as males, but as they mature some become females (unusual as most marine creatures change the other way). The female is much larger and continually harasses the male, p [View Full Entry]

So my second day in Cairns began with a trip up north to Daintree and Cape Tribulation, which was really really pretty. We also had a stop off at a rainforest habitat, got to feed some Kangaroo's, Wallabies and Wallaroos (never ever heard of these before- a cross between a wallaby and a kangaroo). We then had lunch on Cape Tribulation, but no swimming unfortunately because of the crocodiles and stingers :-(. We then took a cruise down the Daintree River to see some nesting crocodiles in the wild which pretty awesome. On the way back though the road was so [View Full Entry]

Happy New Year!  Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Even though it seemed like it would be better to be back in Sydney, New Year's was really good...it's all what you make of it, right? Had a fairly lazy day of lounging at the pool with Els, my Belgian roommate, and doing not much else. Again, not much to do in Cairns unless you go out for a day tour somewhere. In the evening, we went to dinner and came back to meet Mette, our Danish roommate, and Chen and Sylvia (Germany). Headed out to the Esplanade to watch the fireworks...I'm sure nothing compared to Sydney but hey, I've never [View Full Entry]
