Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Before we discuss Cairns, I have to tell you about the Lorikeets and our last 2 days in Surfers. The day before we left we did a load of laundry and hung it on the drying rack, which was placed in the living room under the ceiling fan, so it would dry. We left the window and the Balcony door open a bit. Then we went off to town for the day. Just as we got to town it started to pour and it poured all day. By the time it stopped it was after 6:00 and so we took the [View Full Entry]

Rainbow Lorikeets with no fear
I can't believe how close I was able to get to him.
He really wants to come in the flat and find that nice perch with all the clean clothes!

I can't believe that my trip is nearly half over. Time has really gone by very quickly. I left Airlie Beach and started north to Cairns. I was suppose to spend two nights on Magnetic Island, but I decided to leave a little early. Magnetic Island is just off the coast from Townsville... the city that supposedly gets more sunshine than any other spot in Australia. I worked my magic and surprise.... I brought rain. It absolutely poured rain while I was there, so it wasn't a hard decision to leave early. That night we stayed in Mission Beach. The hostel [View Full Entry]

Jumped on an early tram by the skin of our teeth and made our way through the city to the the airport via the Skybus. No dramas checking in, although we both got randomly tested for traces of explosives! Must look dodgy.. Our hostel in Cairns was called Gilligans, and was a huge place calling itself a Backpackers resort hotel, and had a lovely pool and out door bar, a huge indoor bar/club area with pool tables, giant screens (handy for the tennis) and well equipped rooms with balconys. A bit of a luxury really but still only 10 pounds a [View Full Entry]

Took a day's tour out to the reef on a sail boat for swimming and snorkelling the reef. The boat moored just before Michaelmas Reef were we stayed for about 3.5 hours, and had lunch inbetween snorkels. The highlight was a green turtle, casually swimming under us and sauntering around. We asked the crew why they are called Green Turles, when they are brown in colour, the reason being when they are made into soup, which is common in Japan, it is a bright green colour. Poor things! We also saw lots of brightly coloured fish (parrot fish - some pretty [View Full Entry]

The two R's are the reason for coming to Cairns. I was slightly concerned regarding the weather - theoretically the rainy season could set in in a massive way any second, but luckily so far we have only been treated to fairly frequent, but not too crazy, showers. I have been on a couple of trips here, firstly to the Atherton Tablelands, an inland area of rainforest up in the hills, where it was a little cooler and less humid than Cairns. Day one of the trip we went wildlife spotting, seeing, among other things, the Muskyrat Kangaroo, the forest dragon [View Full Entry]

Took a scenic flight over the reef and rainforest off the coast of Cairns, which was just amazing. The plane only took 5 people in total. As we flew over a really populated reef, Tongue Reef, the pilot lowered the plane down to the water for us to see the turtles, manta rays, dugongs and sharks. There seemed to be hundreds of turtles. The waves are so big where the inner and outer reefs meet, they can be seen from space. Great trip, definitely one of our highlights so far! On the way back from the airport, called into Cairns Botanical [View Full Entry]

Phew! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Well, you can say it is a little warmer here than in Tokyo, with a minimum of 24 degrees (at night!) and despite copious application of sun cream and sitting in the shade, I have managed to burn my feet and, for some bizarre reason, the back of my left hand! I am going diving on the Barrier Reef tomorrow and then going up to Cape Tribulation (another World Heritage site, rainforest and stuff like that) on Sunday and Monday. I spent yesterday chilling out at Cairns' lagoon and today I got on a bus to visit a beach approx. 30 [View Full Entry]

Arrive in Cairns from Ayers Rock, and check into a YHA with a pool and spa area! Very civilised. Cairns is beautiful; has a lovely harbour, surrounded by rainforest, and great shops/bars. It also has a lagoon for swimming in on the edge of the ocean, as you can't swim in the ocean due to stingers (small but deadly jellyfish). In the evening the fruit bats come out in their thousands - an amazing experience. [View Full Entry]

It was good to be back on a plane again, Alice Springs to Cairns in 1 hour 50 mins... phew. You really don't realise just how big Australia is until you've travelled it by road for a while. We were enjoying every minute of this particular plane journey. As it was a clear day you could see most of the land we were covering, 99% of it desert, but as we came into Queensland towards the coast it started to get much greener, then the sea as we turned to land at Cairns airport. We stayed at a nice hostel call [View Full Entry]

Michealmas Cay..
Onland at Michealmas Cay
With the birds

Yo Guys, Lots been happening again in the world of rich. After arriving in Airlie Beach I booked a 2 day sailing trip through the Whitsundays. It was a cool experience despite it chucking it down when we arrived at the worlds whitest beach - whitehaven! But I went snorkelling in the coral reef which was amazing. I choked when I first went underwater just through not being able to believe the massive array of fish! Also saw dolphins and turtles in the water when I was on the boat which was really ace. What else....the captain of our boat got [View Full Entry]
