Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Feeling much better today we were more than ready to enjoy a full day on and around the Great Barrier Reef, another world heritage area. We opted for a fairly small vessel which could only host about 30 people so we automatically had a bit more of a family atmosphere. Also, the guys running the ship really made it worth hooking up with this company. Other companies host up to 70 or even 100 people and they will probably stick them in the same sized area for snorkelling and diving as we were in with only 30 people. We pretty much [View Full Entry]

Cairns- hangover! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Today was a big blank for most of us. We started very late, doing nothing really and then some more nothing. The hostel staff couldn't stop laughing at us and we got to hear phrases like: "Man, you guys should have seen yourselves this morning. You looked like a million dollars" or "An hour ago it seemed to be the night of the living dead" and "Don't go in there, I think somebody's dying!". The only good thing we managed to do today was to book ourselves on one of the reef tours for tomorrow. And that was about it! [View Full Entry]

Biggles over Cairns Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
The phrase ‘technical fault’, even before we’ve left the ground, is one of those things one doesn’t like to hear in the same sentence as ‘This aircraft has a…’. It doesn’t rank as highly as, say, ‘brace brace brace’ in the lexicon of aviation terminology one would never wish to hear, but it’s certainly way above ‘This aircraft is good to go’ or, my personal favourite, ‘Welcome to such and such airport, please do not get out of your seats until we are stopped at the terminal’. C seemed to take it quite we [View Full Entry]

The final stretch on the road. No more campsites with possum attacks, frogs in the shower cabin or lizards sneaking around the van to steal food. We decided to book ourselves into a hostel for our time in Cairns and ended up right opposite the central Cairns shopping mall, only a few hundred metres away from the heart of the city. In the afternoon we had a little walk around the Esplanade and found a very nice public pool right by the beach. We decided to leave the pool for later and do some shopping and have dinner. On the way [View Full Entry]

Dive dive dive! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
When I was a young adolescent I climbed all the way to the top diving board at the local swimming pool. My thinking at the time was that to climb back down would be so embarrassing that I would have to jump. After about 10 minutes it became clear to me that my capacity for humiliation was far greater than my resolve to throw myself off an unfeasibly high platform, and I climbed back down. Fast forward 25 years or so and it turns out that my humiliation threshold has dropped by about 9 minutes. The climb back into the boat [View Full Entry]

Obligatory Underwater Shot
Arty Shot

After our 24 hour journey to Australia we arrived in Cairns to 95 degree humid weather. We started our week of snorkeling in the great barrier reef. I don't have any pictures because i had to take it on an underwater camera but it was unbelieveable. There were fish of every color everywhere and the coral was amazing. We saw sting rays, sea cucumbers and jelly fish. We also got to enjoy a nice boat ride out to the reef and got massive sunburns. Next we went to a zoo in cairns where we got to see all of the awesome [View Full Entry]

Cairns - Week 1 Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Sadly we can not afford an aircraft big enough to accommodate the team of wild horses that would be necessary to drag us out of a perfectly serviceable aeroplane in mid flight, so we’ll be foregoing the skydiving experience. Fortunately there are plenty of other opportunities for recreational daring-do to keep us occupied in the tropical playground that is Cairns and its surrounding area. Swimming in the sea at Cairns, whilst apparently cheaper than the myriad of barrier reef diving and snorkelling options available, is not one such opportunity. It’s not so much the grubby looki [View Full Entry]

The night bus was another long journey bit I managed to get maybe an hours sleep. I arrived in Cairns at 06:20, and caught the courtesy bus to the Bohemia resort. I was exhausted after 4 nights with out any real sleep and my words and actions were a little slurred! I had to wait until 14:00 before they would let me check into my room so the morning was spent doing some washing and enjoying a full English breakie. Luckily I bumped into Kim and Trev at the hostel and they gave me a bed until check in, cheers guys! [View Full Entry]

A long way from home

Beach Heaven

Cyclone, my arse! The weather in cairns was beautiful, in fact too hot for a couple of days! It was especially bad when our air conditioning broke down in our room, it was like sleeping in an oven!! The day we arrived in Cairns (off a rather dirty, damp and uncomfortable 12 hour bus journey!) we bumped into two of the girls we'd spent load of time with in Thailand, Gemma and Carolyn. It was so good seeing them so went out that evening with them to celebrated Caz's birthday and that they were leaving the next day to go home. [View Full Entry]

After 6 weeks of stagnation, i've been on the move nonstop since leaving Brisbane. Left one of the best jobs I've ever had a little bit early as there just werent enough hours for casual backpackers. Understandable. So Wednesday (one of those wednesdays ago) i sped up to hervey bay, which is only notable for its easy passage to fraser islands, a small island off the coast that has no real roads. Its highway is the beach, and getting through the island consists of unpaved sand roads that are only accessible via 4WD vehicles. Companies send out 10 backpackers and all [View Full Entry]
