Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well from our last post we have course come to Australia and been here for some time. We landed in Sydney to begin our journey. We walked everywhere is this massive city and saw most of it. The botanical gardens were huge, amazing, and at night the sky was filled with massive bats that made their home there. After a short walk through the gardens we were greated with an impressive view of the Sydney opera [View Full Entry]

Crocodile Attack! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
OK, the title's a tad melodramatic and should more accurately read "Crocodile Attack Show". This was the main event at Hartley's Crocodile Farm some 40km north of Cairns and, conveniently ignoring my usual concerns about the ethics of turning wild animals into performing spectacles, an impressive show it was too. One man who has obviously had his fear emotion surgically removed spent some 45 minutes showing us how crocodiles behave when presented with food opportunities. Whilst the food in question was ostensibly some bait on a rope, it was pretty obvious that given half a chance the croc woul [View Full Entry]

Established in South Australia in 1893 the Stanley Wine Company has always prided itself on the quality and reliability of its products. This philosophy has been instrumental in the Stanley cask becoming an Australian icon. It was pretty much instrumental in making me feel decidedly under the weather today as well. To be fair, the bottle of Merlot that accompanied dinner, preceded as it was by the always risky long island iced tea, have also played significant parts in my recent downfall. Unfortunately the body was denied the extended lie in it so sorely needs because we h [View Full Entry]

Great Barrier Reef Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Today we got up early to get to the harbour at 7.30 to set sail at 8.30 to the great barrier reef. It took about 2 hours to get to 'Hastings Reef'. We went snorkelling for a while then had lunch on the boat. Our first ozzie bbq with proper fish and everything! we then made our way to 'Saxon Reef', which was so much prettier. i wanted to spend longer in the sea but got back onto the boat because we wanted to go in the semi submarine. straight from that we got a little speed boat to a pooey [View Full Entry]

This was my first day. Although I had the worlds worse flu i dealt with the jet lag quite well. we went shopping in one Cairns shopping centre. The first shop we went into skinny HAD to feel some shorts and the metal shelf fell on her toe. i cudnt stop laughing, but it looked painful as it bruised in a second. With her limping we went to the lagoon, and more shopping [View Full Entry]

You'd think it would be so romantic, Valentine's day on the other side of the world in the sun when everybody else is freezing their arses off at home. Forget that. Trying to be romantic in 75-80% humidity just doesn't work. And the sun didn't shine either. It rained all night, held off for a bit in the morning and then rained some more in the afternoon. It wasn't too bad for us though because we had to sort out all of our stuff because we are leaving tomorrow for New Zealand!!! We ended up spending loads of time deciding what [View Full Entry]

We drove to the Wicked Depot in the morning to drop off the van and when we got there, this woman asked us if we had any problems or complaints to report. Uhhh, yes, just a couple! So we told her what the problems were ie... having to drive in a van that was unregistered and not roadworthy. We expected some kind of apology really. All we got was "Oh haha haha, really? It's not registered? Whoops." And that was it. So we went into the office to finalise the hand-over and nothing was mentioned again. They ordered us a taxi [View Full Entry]

Yep, I jumped out of a plane!!!! And yes, I promise never to do it again. I'm glad I did it, but it was terrifying!!!! Sky diving is something I've always thought about doing, and I thought what better place to do it than in Australia. Plus they advertise it like crazy here and I met a bunch of people who said that if you're going to do it, you have to do it at Mission Beach. So I did!!! Kristen decided just to watch me land on the beach though. So the crew from Paul's Extreme parachuting picked me up [View Full Entry]

We had to get up early this morning to drop off Flo and Anne at the airport. We drove them in our van and when we got there, we parked in the drop-off zone and decided to help them with their luggage. Before we even knew what was happening, we saw a guy walking over to the van- already in the process of writing us a ticket!!! We ran out as quick as possible and told him we'd go but the arsehole said that because he'd already started writing, it was too late for that. Grrrrr!!!! Sooo annoying- $25 fine. However, [View Full Entry]
