Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Marvelessssssssssssssss!. Laekker seafood lunch onboard, glassboat sight, snorkeling + entertainment from Dale i kahytten, foer kajkiggeriet. Dejlig musik! Skoent jeg allerede har fyldt backpack'en (laes: frekventeret et aussie/postoffice for snart the 4.th time) I couldn't help - pl [View Full Entry]

Michaelmas Cay - 40 km ud i havet fra Cairns. Wauv....

WOW...that's all i can really say...what a month! It's all gone so quickly! I can't actually believe that my time in Oz is coming to an end! We've managed to jam-pack so much into the past 4 weeks, it's crazy!! Unfortunately, i won't be able to tell you everything that i've been up to, but i'll try and pick some of the best bits...the rest will have to wait until i get home and can tell you all in person!! After Sydney, i had a quick stop over in Coffs Harbour for one night. It was a really nice place to [View Full Entry]

The Finalle ...  Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
This is my last diary entry for Australia, and it is with a sad feeling I leave Oz. So, my trip has come to yet another end of a chapter and another continent travelled, experience and sampled. It has been a wonderful ride up the coast, full of ups and downs. In total though I will always have a part of Australia in my heart. The amazing people I have met, things I have seen and done along with the friendships I have made along the way have taught me alot. After some rather eventful and at times relxing days on [View Full Entry]

Minjin Swing Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Our last full day in Cairns, so we had to do a Minjin Swing. All day non-stop it was raining, got drenched even tho we wore our rain jackets, but we were still both very excited. When we got to AJ Hackett Bungy we watched a few bungys, above a small waterfall and stream, and one minjin swing, which is when we realised what we had got ourselves in to! We got harnessed up in smelly wet harnesses and got attached to a large rope put on our back. I was given 'the cord' as somehow i managed to pull it [View Full Entry]

Hello all! PICTURES Sorry for the massive delay in posts but there really isn't much internet to speak of when you are in the outback. Well from our last post we have course come to Australia and been here for some time. We landed in Sydney to begin our journey. We walked everywhere is this massive city and saw most of it. The botanical gardens were huge, amazing, and at night the sky was filled with massive bats that made their home there. After a short walk through the gardens we were greated with an impressive view of the Sydney opera [View Full Entry]

Crocodile Attack! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
OK, the title's a tad melodramatic and should more accurately read "Crocodile Attack Show". This was the main event at Hartley's Crocodile Farm some 40km north of Cairns and, conveniently ignoring my usual concerns about the ethics of turning wild animals into performing spectacles, an impressive show it was too. One man who has obviously had his fear emotion surgically removed spent some 45 minutes showing us how crocodiles behave when presented with food opportunities. Whilst the food in question was ostensibly some bait on a rope, it was pretty obvious that given half a chance the croc woul [View Full Entry]
