Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Cyclone Larry! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
HI all, Just a quick update as we have only just managed to get power and phone lines restored after 2 days without following Cyclone Larry which tore through Queensland and the Cairns region. Today's papers suggested that it came with winds of upto 280/290 kph and having been woken up by the winds at 6am on monday morning I reckon they werent far off from what we saw outside, usual hurricane and cyclone stupidity , power cables down, phone lines down, flooding closing roads and large uprooted palm trees scattered all over the place. All in all an exciting but [View Full Entry]

I know its only been a few days since our most recent blogs but this event you all just had to hear about!!!!!! We decided to leave Cairns yesterday(sunday) and head up north a little to a place called cape tribulation. Its supposed to be pretty awesome there. So on Stuarts advice about how nice it is, we went northwards instead of southwards. We took a few hours to drive up there, admiring the sights on the way. We did the tourist bit etc etc and then tried to book into some local campsites. All of them came back with the [View Full Entry]

Days 126 & 127 Happy Birthday Auntie Yvie!! We checked out to hear that Cairns, our next destination, was about to be hit by a grade 5 (the worst you can get) cyclone. Oh dear! We jumped back on the ferry anyway and caught our bus. Some of the towns on the way up were being evacuated due to the looming cyclone Larry. We arrived in Cairns safe and sound and checked into our hostel. Got chatting to our room mates and prepared to be stuck in the room for days. Happy Birthday EGG!! The next morning we awoke to battering [View Full Entry]

Cairns 06.03.2006 to 08.03.2006 BEWARE of the GILLIGAN'S! SHIT place! I arrived in Cairns at about 5 o'clock in the morning and took the bus to the city about 7. I found the Gilligans Backpacker in Lonely Planet and stayed at this place. The problems began in the first minutes. You can't check in there before "2 pm"! At least it was 2.30 pm to get a bed. The staff is very, very unfriendly and it's very impersonal. The top of my Gilligans experience was, when I booked a tour to the Cape Tribulation for one night and I asked if [View Full Entry]

Hi ya everybody Just a quick update......here is our new van. Its called the eagle, and as you can see it features the band the eagles. So both our wickeds have had a musical theme! It was lucky because we could have ended up with a playboy bunny van, or an NYPD one which were both sat at the depot when we arrived. There was also a mock qantas one with the kangaroo logo with bollocks hanging down!! I think we came off lightly! Oh yeah Bex, we didn't expect to see any camels either!! We are going to be heading [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we finished our 4-day dive trip. As it turned out, the weather was actually pretty good, and the dives were awesome, and the people we met on the boat were great!!! We did a total of 10 dives (2 night dives!!) and I got to try my hand as an amatuer underwater photographer again (National Geographic, here i come!). My personal highlight was seeing a sting Ray, and Gary actually saw a (small) shark. We're currently hanging out in Cairns, because the weather is gorgeous and we can't seem to tear ourselves away from the beach/pool. There is supposed to [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Cairns a few days before Cyclone Larry was due to hit therefore we couldn't do much but wait for it to pass before making plans. Fortunately Larry didn't hit Cairns too bad and we were safe in a hostel, luckily we hadn't yet picked up our campervan! Once we had our van we drove up to Port Douglas where we spent a couple of nights. We also visited Daintree village, Mossman Gorge and tried to head up to Cape Tribulation. We didn't get far as the road was flooded from the cyclone so we never even made it [View Full Entry]

Home, Home Again Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns
Our final breakfast on the Nimrod was more basic than the others, perhaps reflecting that we had run out of food, or perhaps more likely that two of the crew had been throwing up all night thanks to the storm. We took a bus from Port Douglas, where we moored down to Cairns and being thoroughly exhausted did little but drink coffee, and go to the cinema. This is something that I had no intentions of doing, but the thought of two hours in a comfy chair that wasnt rocking and rolling was very appealing to me. I ended up going [View Full Entry]

Since the last entry, Michelle and I booted around Syndey a bit, flew out to Ayer's Rock, and then caught a flight for Cairns. Sydney is a cool city but in the end, it's really just another city. The harbour with the Opera House and harbour bridge is very scenic and has lots o shops and restaurants. Seeing the opera house up close is actually kind of surreal. We then went to the Syndey aquarium. Highlights of the aquarium are the crocodile, the open water shark exhibit, and a large Great Barrier Reef tank. The next morning we flew out to [View Full Entry]

Hello, After the whitsundays tour we made our way up to Mission Beach which was where we took part in the white water rafting. We were picked up around 7.30 in the morning and driven to the main base where we grabbed some breakfast and got our briefing. Within about half an hour we were on a coach being driven through the mountains to the top of the course. The sites were once again amazing and we were told that the course we were rafting through was actually surrounded by the oldest, untouched rainforest in world! The coach journey was long [View Full Entry]
