Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

We are now on the East Coast and we are loving it! Cairns is an awesome city and totally geared up for backpackers, because of that reason I could never live here but for us on our travels it is wicked! Our flight was delayed by 2 hours so we didn’t actually get into Cairns until about 10am and unfortunately we were not allowed to check into our Hostel until 2pm so we just grabbed some breakfast and had a wonder around the city. To be honest we were so tired and dazed we weren’t really taking anything in at this [View Full Entry]

Days 29-30 Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City
Day 29 We picked up our new camper today and it is another Sandman! We are loving it! We picked the camper up at about 10am and then drove back to the hostel to pick up Yassine, Jackie and Tisha and we all headed out of town to the “Crystal Cascades” which is an uphill walk (only about half an hour) with a series of waterfalls to look at and pools to swim in as you go. As Cairns is in a tropical area the waterfalls are in the rainforest so all around us were the tallest trees and we saw [View Full Entry]

Days 32 - 33 Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City
Days 32 -33 Yesterday we went to the Mirra Mirra falls with Yassine and, a new girl from the room, Anna. It was about an hour and a half away and we had to drive up the tightest and windiest road ever, it was really scary! Eventually we got to the top and there is a drive lasting about 40mins that has stops along the way to view three different waterfalls and they were all really spectacular. Unfortunately the water was too cold - even for Andy - so we just took pictures. Then we went to this lake that was [View Full Entry]

Days 34 - 38 Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City
I have not been keeping up with the diary over the past few days so I really will have to remember what I can. We set of for Cape Tribulation, which is just north of Cairns, on Sunday and it really is cool there. It is another national park but it is rainforest and along the beach you can see where the GBR begins so they say it’s “where rainforest and reef meet”. On the first day we just checked out some of the beaches and then cooked up a BBQ together. It was really scary because we had to [View Full Entry]

G'day folks! We made it to Australia. And what a place this is...Its feels so good to finally be in an English speaking country!!! We walked into a shopping mall on the first day and it was a huge culture shock, everyone spoke English, every conversation was in English...we were seriously overwhelmed! Everything is "too eazie" (a very famous Ozzie saying)!!! You might find in the Australia blogs that Jit will have a tendency to use a lot of aussie phrases, bear with him! The second thing that hits you hard is how expensive things are...ok compared to the UK, Australia [View Full Entry]

A tiny part of our view
A tiny part of our view
And I mean tiny! More to come.
After flying from Cairns to Sydney, everyone met up at the Tiffany Apartments, where I'm staying. We listened to the director spell out all the rules for living here, and after an hour or so, we got to move in. There was some room switching, so my roommates now are Jackie, who I've been with for the trip, Claire and Sarah who came on the second orientation, and Jackie who was on no orientation and Sarit who was on the first orientation with me. I'll post pictures soon of our place, but it's pretty nice. We have a cleaning service that [View Full Entry]

Thought they were both asleep, but Riley was peeking.
Today we spent a lazy day. While not as exciting, memorable, adventuresome, or interesting, perhaps, it was relaxing, and we're glad of that. Re-organized our stuff for our next adventure, 3 days on the Great Barrier Reef, had a late breakfast, an ice cream cone for lunch, and then some shopping. Bought some shorts for Frank, a pair of shorts for Riley, a manicure for Annette, a souvenir for Krista, and a bottle of water for Dante. Krista would love it here. They have size small, xs, xxs, and 3xs! Riley found a 3xs that fit her. Caught up on email [View Full Entry]

The meal we had last night was amazing. We decided to take a cab into the centre because time had just ran away with us and I asked the taxi driver 'Woody' where he would reccomend as a good place to eat. He said he personally liked 'Dundees'. It was a smart restaurant on the waterfront and the meals were more expensive than our normal choices but we decided that as it was almost the end of our stay here we would push the boat out a bit. The menu was really different. I decided to be adventuous and chose the [View Full Entry]

Well here I am again with quite a few days to catch up. The internet access here doesn't allow us to upload photos which is such a shame because the views and sights that I would love to share with you are amazing. Our first full day in Cains was spent getting our bearings really. We walked from the resort 'The Lakes' which is fabulous, into Cairns Town along the Espanade. The Esplanade is a lovely walkway along the edge of the ocean into the town. It has numerous jettys and public recreation areas all along it and the whole thing [View Full Entry]

The long awaited bungee day! I felt sick all day, and I’m pretty sure it was just butterflies. We got to the place, A.J. Hacket, and I was to go on the minjin swing first, with Matt and Caroline. The minjin swing is where you put some harness on, and you get hooked to this wire, as well as hooked to the two other people. You put your legs out so you look like Superman, and then get hoisted up as high as the bungee tower. When the little light on the ground goes green, one of you has to pull [View Full Entry]
