Mama CrocodileJust sunning herself on the banks of the Daintree River.
We continued our tour of the rainforests of the south pacific by visiting the tropical variety north of Cairns. We drove up to Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge for a quick swim, cruised the Daintree River looking for wildlife and ended up at Cape Tribulation where the rainforest comes right down the side of a mountain and meets the Great Barrier Reef in the sea below with just a thin strip of sand separating the two.
We saw lots of exciting wildlife on the river. A beautifully colored kingfisher (Mom and Aunt Allison would have loved it), tons of crocs, some snakes the size of Amazonian anacondas but three times stronger, osprey, a bright green tree frog which hitched a ride in our little boat to avoid the river snakes, and a ton of interesting rainforest plants and trees.
So that's it for Australia! Although we never saw a dingo, kangaroo or koala we saw lots of gorgeous scenery, learned to recognize the Southern Cross in the night sky, made some friends, learned to sail and snorkel... all in all a very successful trip down under...
Looking forward to arriving in Bangkok tomorrow and beginning the Asia chapter
Baby CrocThis little guy (no bigger than a small rodent) was sitting on a branch in the river. Our guide told us it was 21 weeks old already so it must take a long time for them to grow to full size!
of this journey.
P.S. Thanks everyone for all the comments and messages - we love checking into the blog and hearing from you guys!
Daintree RiverThis is a view of the mouth of the Daintree River and the surrounding rainforest from a lookout point on the way to Cape Tribulation.
