daintree river cruise HEY ENGLAND!!!
I thought it was high time I did a wee blog of what i've been up to in Cairns. I know to some of you im repeating myself so please bare with me...
I've spent the last few months working at PJ O'Briens, an Irish pub in the city centre. I have had a great time working there, its been a lot of fun. Very basic bartending, no cocktails, and have finally got to grips with all the different drink orders. I've heard a 1/2 pint being callled a pot, a midi and a half, and a pint doesnt really exist!! They usually serve beers a little smaller and they call it a scooner so everytime I have to ask if a pints ok and they give me a look of disgust that we dont do it aussie style! A bottle of beer is a stubbie but us meads have called them that for years!! thanks for the heads up dad! ha ha. I have had to complete a Responsible Service of Alcohol course and they are pretty strict on service over here which is great. Anyways enough about booze!
I've been staying in a hostel

daintree river cruise the whole time and its been awesome as most of the people staying there work at PJ's or the other venues in Cairns so there's a group of us that have been there a while and its like a little family. aww... Me and Charlotte have had a room to ourselves most of the time. In the last few weeks we've both been housekeeping as well for free accomodation to save the maximum we can. So I havent been hitting the alcohol that hard recently as finishing at the pub at 3/4am and getting up again to hoover and change beds at 10am has killed me!! I realise you all have no sympathy because I'm still on holiday in oz and cant complain right??!!
Have been on two barrier reef trips. The first on Charlotte's birthday but neither of us could dive as couldn't pop our ears so just snorkelled which was still brilliant. But I got to do a dive this week. The water was so much clearer than in the Whitsundays and the coral was simply beautiful. You can see why people head here for this reason alone. Got really lucky with the weather as its been
pretty gloomy past few weeks but the sun shone all day. It was one guide to two newby divers and our guide was fantastic. He showed us which coral we could touch - one felt like velvet - and licked up a few things to show us like sea cucumbers. So excited when we saw a turtle! We got close enough to touch their shells!! Amazing. Obviously, saw lots of weird and wonderful fish. I found Nemo!! He was hiding in the anemomies just like in the movie ha ha. So that was pretty cool. Didint manage to catch a glimpse of reef sharks or rays but nevermind. The crew, food and boat were great and the whole day was a lot of fun. Its nearly the end of stinger season so we didnt have to wear stinger suits which was ace and it felt great to swim in the sea properly again. I didnt have an underwater camera but we went on a glas floor boat tour over the reef so the photos dont show the true beauty but give you an idea of how amazing it is in the water if thats what it looks like from above.

croc in the daintree river Went to Cape Tribulation last week. The area hosts a rainforest older than the amazon, and reaches the coast. On the beach you can see the coral from the reef on one side and rainforest on the other - very wierd. I took a river cruise down the Daintree and was lucky spot a few salt water crocodiles at low tide. We walked through the rainforest and had a look at Mossman Gorge where you can swim in the river. Stopped in Port Douglas on the way back so we packed a lot in for a day trip but it was a great day. Managed not to get wet!!
Last few days in Cairns have been spent full of alcohol. Technically its not binging if you dont stop mum!! My last shift at PJs was hilarious. I got handcuffed to Barry, my manager, and we badly served customers together. Then had a bin full of ice and water chucked over me!! Still had to work and afraid was a little intoxicated by the end of the shift... Not so responsible eh? Had a big leaving party sun for oothers who were leaving. Went to Crystal Cascades mon -

So sadly, in 3 months I have left Cairns 3 times!! Ha ha.But the city is lovely, especially with good weather and have felt very at home. And its been a good opportunity to save some money and chill out. The photos are of great nights out and some touristy bits as standard. Enjoy!
Thurs i left for Darwin. I start a 9 day tour tomorrow of the area aroung darwin, ayres rock and finish in alice springs.
