58 Degrees C - Phew That's Hot!
Published: September 29th 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » BlackallTuesday 27th September – and today is our nephew, Neil’s birthday – our best wishes to you Neil. The traffic noise must have calmed dramatically as we both had a good night’s sleep although we were up and about before 7:00am. Blackall, our next destination is barely an hour’s drive away so we didn’t have to hurry ourselves. I took time to part process a blog, taking advantage of the free internet connection on the caravan park. Graham, meanwhile, mooched about chatting to neighbours and gradually putting stuff away ready to depart. Eventually we hit the road and had another steady journey – very little traffic means we can travel at our own pace although with such long and straight roads it’s often difficult to know if we’re holding anything up. We reached Blackall in good ... read more
Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Blackall
Published: May 1st 2010Oceania » Australia » Queensland » BlackallDidn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to Blackall - the home town of Debby’s relatives who emigrated years ago. Debby had met one of them when she was 17, but had no contact since, didn’t even know where they lived, or if they were still there, or even alive. So we went to see the town, which had been Debby’s ambition since she was 17. After some sightseeing we sticky beaked the local pub. Photos on the walls of the local football team did not show the family name of McDonald. The republican, Nev Dolinski, offered his help. Not only did he know Debby’s cousin Nigel, but Nigel was actually in town that day! Nev discovered where he was and off we went in search. Poor Nigel, there he was minding his ... read more
Breaking new ground here! I’m actually typing this in the car with Chris at the helm doing all of her allowed 130 km/h. We are on the way to Mt Isa (in Qld) having spent the night at the delightful Safari Lodge Motel in Tennant Creek. I don’t need to report on either TC or the motel, since both were adequately covered on the way up. I do however owe you on Darwin. In summary, we loved Darwin. Magnificent in the morning and the evening - but you did need to be inside or swimming in the middle of the day. The car was a good refuge as required. Our stay at the Palms City Resort was excellent. Our cabin - we really had almost the best cabin for once in our lives, was excellent. Surrounded ... read more

We were held up because Michael's car broke down. Headed at 1pm and stop at 4.30pm at Nyal State Forest and camp the night along the Murray River. The TV reception was good we watched the Collingwood v Sydney footy game and of course Collingwood won by 24points. Next stop Broken Hill and stop for Internet for Michael. On the 25th Aug we camped at Cameron's Corner. This is border of NSW, SA and Qld. Campsite unpowered was for $5.00 and donated to Flying Doctor and shower was $3.00 per person. It was bit cold and we had bon fire and have a lovely time. Here we tried Papa's portable ... read more
We left Evening Star early after saying goodbye to Tony and Trish, some people Steve meet on the Rappville range in June and they had made their way to Charleville at the same time so we spent a day getting to know them.We made our way to Tambo to get ourselves a Tambo Teddy. Tambo is famous for these cute little teddies . The locals decided to start up a business to create some employment in the town (pop 400) and four ladies came up with the idea of making Teddies. As you can imagine they got laughed at a lot but they bit the bullet and today they have sold over 30000 teddies to people from all over the world. Each teddy is numbered and the larger teddies are individually named after local stations in ... read more
Last night was a real dream compared to the night before. We stopped at a little place called Cunnamulla about 200 km over the border into Queensland. Very clean, grass even !!! Can't remember when we last saw grass. All our washing and ironing up to date and we even found time to wander around town. For those country music fans there is a statue of the Cunnamulla Fella, imortalised in a song by Slim Dusty and written by Stan Coster. It depicts the young stockmen of the 50's and 60's who worked from sun-up until sun-down and relaxed around the campfire at night, sitting on their saddles or swags yarning about the days events. The statue in the centre of Cunnamulla is made of bronze and was sculpted by Archie St. Clair from drawings by ... read more
