Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

After some disastrous attempts to stand up on a glorified ironing board, and a couple more nights at the pub watching the locals get trashed and fight each other, we were beginning to feel very much at home in Lennox. After realising our intended 2 nights had crept silently up to 4, the decision was made to move on as we needed to get our butts in gear to see all of the east coast highlights in a mere 3 weeks. We arrived in Brisbane and found ourselves checking into a very cheap dorm room. The reason for the cheapness of [View Full Entry]

Hey guys, well, our campervan rocks! Picked it up in Cairns last Tuesday, its compact but its home. Anyway spent a few days up in Cairns checked out the city, went snorkelling and scuba diving in the Great Barrier reef which was absolutely amazing- the fish and coral were so colourful, we saw a giant sea turtle and Liz got to see nemo! We did try and take photos but the disposable waterproof camera we took diving filled up with water! We then went down the coast to Airlie Beach which looks over the Whitsundays and stopped off at Hervey Bay/ [View Full Entry]

This morning we got up extra early, got ourselves ready, and got a shuttle to the roma street bus terminal at 8:50am, where we caught another bus out to Beerwa, Queensland, home to none other than Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo! An early birthday present to myself... Anyway, we got there, payed our respects to Harriet the Galapagos Tortoise, who died on the weekend at 176 years of age (she couldn't wait 4 more days?), and made our way over to the Animal Planet Crocoseum. there are always different shows going on at the crocoseum, and as today was a school [View Full Entry]

We thought we would have a day at probably one of the most famous Zoos in the world. Thanks to the 'cor crikey Steve Irwin. I am not a big zoo fan, but I have to admit, that this zoo was a fantastic day. The interaction between the keepers, with the animals, was noticable, and as a result, the animals were very active in their own ways. The size of the place, and animals to view/interact with was enormous. Here are just a few of the animals to view. [View Full Entry]

Snooze time.
How cute....

Wednesday April 5th Lo from OZ! Late start today, as we’re all feeling a little burnt after the last few days of being really busy. But hell, we’re only 45 minutes away from Australia zoo, and its overcast, so we won’t get burnt any more! We do the short drive with ease, and pull into the zoo. Not too busy here yet…good! The first thing we see that there is a show at 12:00, so we rush over to the venue, and Steve isn’t doing the show…damn, well maybe later at the “agro” show. The show is pretty informative, and shows [View Full Entry]

11.02.06 So we arrived in Brisbane, got on the shuttle bus and went to Aussie way backpackers in Petrie Terrace. It's a really nice hostel and it has a pool. All the people are really nice except for one guy who is in our dorm. A big finnish guy, who is very rude with bad manners. We tried to move rooms but none left. Oh well, Marco (the french guy also in our dorm) is ok. We went for a walk around the city and then relaxed by the pool in the evening. This was really good as we met some [View Full Entry]

Ahhh look at that cute cuddly thing
Say hello to mummy!
AAAHHHH

Today was dedicated to seeing one man, Steve Irwin! Some people might know him as the Crocodile Hunter or simply as the lunatic from tv who plays with crocs. We left Brisbane fairly early for a two hour drive up North to some place called Beerwah which is where the zoo is located. Once we arrived we were faced with a hefty entrance fee of 34$, and that's including the discounts! They sure as hell know why people come here and milk it too. The girl at the till said that a lot of times Steve drives around the zoo with [View Full Entry]
