Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

This entry was lost in the Aug 1st crash of the Travelblog site. I've done my best to restore it to its original form. I think it's basically the same with a few photos in different order. Many thanks to Cameron, Heather & Nick, and the Travelblog admin. ------------------------------------------------------ I'd like to begin by letting you all know that this entry does not include any references to anything remotely related to seasickness...or anything else unpleasant. Now that we have that out of the way, let's get to the details of the rest of my Aussie experience. In the las [View Full Entry]

As you can imagine very annoying. Oh at lest not forget the dodgy smell that lingers around from the previous owner. All in all not to bad and Kelly [View Full Entry]

Koala!
A wombat-my favourite!!
Second favourite-jersey cow!!

It had to be done!! Coming all the way to Australia, travelling up the East coast and not going to Australia Zoo would just be a sin!! Whether you would want to go in the memory of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin or to see the amazing range of Australian animals it is a must... I caught a free transfer bus from Noosa to Beerwah on route watching a video about the becoming of Steve Irwin. It was interesting to find out that he caught his first croc at the age of 9, that his dad played a big [View Full Entry]

Me and Steve Irwin
Steve Irwin memorial
Crocs rule!!!

Well guys, we can now confirm, SHE IS REAL !! Bindi Irwin is a living, breathing person. And she’s terrifying. Since Lee and I got back from Cairns, our touristy activities have taken a bit of a back seat to working and saving so there has not been too much to write about. Lee has also been working weekends for a friend at the Botanic Gardens Café in Brisbane to get a bit of extra cash, so our weekends have been somewhat restricted as well. It has, however, allowed me to become an Aussie Rules fan and watch the games [View Full Entry]

Important saftey rules when it comes to crocs
AAggghhhh
Disturbing

Australia Zoo

Wow! Australia zoo is reallly beautiful. Its set in gorgeous tropical parklands, the animals have huge enclosures set up as naturally as possible, its just really nice! I got to hug a koala and play with some echidna- they're so strange, i love them! Spikey marsupials with beaks...and a really long lizardlike tongue! I got to feed them too! Also fed an elephant. It was pretty amazing! Australia zoo is so huge that to see everything properly, i would have to go back another day! I was trying to fit in the shows and the photo opportunities whilst working out the [View Full Entry]

The trip to Brisbane was the first time since we have been here that we've had to use public transport. We got a bus from Hervey Bay down to Brisbane that left at 5:30 am- luckily my favourite time of the day. The city of Brisbane is pretty similar looking to Sydney and I quite liked it. We were staying in a hostel with a bar and club as part of it and with cheap food available from the bar we never really needed to leave. However we thought it'd be a bit pointless to come all the way here just [View Full Entry]

Early start to go to the zoo. took a train to Beerwah which took about an hour and then a connection 5 min bus to the zoo. The zoo is really cool - mainly australian wildlife so i now feel like i'm in OZ as saw the crocs being fed, kangaroos jumping around everywhere (with joeys!), fed and patted the kangaroos and koalas! Saw all the venomous snakes which are found all over oz - (nowhere is safe over here!) - will never complain about wasps again. There is a crocodile show we watched where they pay tribute to steve urwin [View Full Entry]
