CRIKEY! This zoo is awesome! Transport & entry package from the hostels were almost $100 so we decided to make our way to the zoo & save some $$$ - we left around 10am and got there about 12pm - it took a bit longer than we’d expected as we had to wait 45 minutes for the bus connection from the train station! So that left us with 4 1/2 hr hours to explore and we enjoyed every minute there!
We made our way around the park and saw a couple of shows, the croc show was brill - they fed the crocs and got them moving around - they’re so fast it’s scary! They also had 15ft snakes swimming in the pool there too. We saw a koala show too which was cool - they brought a one eyed koala out for the audience to take pictures with - they cleared up a lot of myths about the little critters (i.e. that they aren’t actually stoned on the leaves they eat, just extremely lazy! Lol!). The camel show was good but the camel smelled REALLY bad, they pee on they’re legs to keep them cool - not great if
your down wind of him! The keeper also scooped the camel spit in her hand which completely turned me! The tiger talk was good too, the keepers we’re sitting amongst the tigers which I found a little strange (brave!) and explained about the differences between tigers from different regions of the world, the keeper was telling us the tigers there were scared of really strange things like umbrellas and pushchairs(?). Our favourite show there though was the elephant talk, you got to feed the elephants (the trunk feels really weird), definitely A cool thing to have done though!
We saw various other creatures great & small including various birds, lizards, foxes, and particularly interesting was the 17ft Burmese python in the glass case. It had only eaten a few hours before, something large cause the mid section was absolutely huge! (I def prefer animals with fur! - Bec) We spent a while reading all the Steve Irwin memorials - there were so many there, loads of unbelievable photos and artefacts from his missions, film sets etc - they were fantastic! The guy is a God here!
We spent a good while in the kangaroo pens feeding and petting
them. Allan stalked a mummy until he got the shot of her & her Joey’s head sticking out the pouch - it is sooo cute, check out the pics! We could have spent hours & hours just with them but we were told that the park was closing so we needed to make our way out, then we realised we were literally the last 2 people there and they had to re-open the souvenir shop to let us out! Whoops! All in all it’s been a great day, and we learned that the zoo is expanding to almost treble the size in the next year or 2 so it’s only going to get better! A well recommended trip.
