Geo: -17.2705, 145.58325 April 2015At the end of the last blog I mentioned that we were going up to The Daintree and that Jim had hurt his back. We rested in Cairns for a three nights and then the pain in Jim's back seemed to go much worse so he went to the doctor. After making him do a number of movements (some accompanied by loud groans!) the doctor decided rest and painkillers were all that was required. He seems to have been correct as Jim is almost fully recovered but it did take three weeks during which time he was not able to drive. So I drove up to The Daintree, and more scary, across the ferry. The Daintree area is where the rainforest runs down to the sea. Once you cross the Daintree River (that's ... read more

Well I have a job! I'm now in Atherton which was a 1hr 45min drive from Cairns. Arrived this morning, and just got myself a little settled in, unpacked a few bits etc as I'm going to be here to 3-4 months hopefully! Only getting 3 hours internet a week so contact with everyone online will be minimal! Mostly phone calls. I'm doing pretty good, up in the tablelands which is beautiful :) missing everyone lots! Little jealous you're weather back home is better than mine here, and here in Atherton it's not as warm as in Cairns, but still pleasant enough! Anyway just a little one to say I'm OK and whats new, doubt much will happen until I start working, it's quite a small town, the other backpackers here have been telling me how ... read more

Veel ... read more

A fabulous weekend in Yungaburra, complete with platypus Took my beloved away for a belated birthday celebration weekend. Although our destination is only an hour from home, we rise pre-dawn and drink tea, giggling quietly and excitedly. I finalise our packing while Eric enagages in the now familiar ritual of cooking pasta and heating the stunning spag bol sauce he has cooked for many hours the night before, and packing it into prewarmed thermoses for a roadside breakfast, with little containers of extra virgin olive oil, grated romano cheese, chilli flakes and Maldon salt. We began this ritual onroute to the Wallaby Creek Folk Festival at Cooktown last year, eating spaghetti not long after dawn at a lookout with a view across the splendid, strange, sparse forest that covers that part of the world, looking ... read more

Hi again, Seeing as I had about a week left in Cairns and not much to do, I booked onto a tour up to Yungaburra in the Atherton Tablelands. The Tablelands are basically a lot of green, gently sloping hills, all on top of the mountain range, about 1000ft above sea level. To start the tour, Paul picked us all up at about 7am, and took us on a quick tour of Cairns' industrial estate, where we saw some "native wildlife" - the workmen in trucks and working on the road. Paul explained how they can be identified by their hairy faces and florescent jackets (yellow=junior, orange=adult). Every time we passed one Paul would beep his horn and get everyone to wave. Following this we headed out onto the highway, past a "dingo" (pet dog) about ... read more

Before we went on our Great Barrier Reef Dive trip, we left the city Cairns behind us for a couple of days and took the new wheels/home for a spin in the country and headed to Atherton Tablelands. Also Known as the 'Cairns Highlands' it's in the tropics and part of the Great Dividing Range. We'd read and heard that the scenery was stunning and there was plenty to see and the Tablelands do have a lot to offer but it had been built up a bit much. It was misty, dull and rained pretty much the whole time and having spent the previous few weeks being incredibly spoiled with natural wonders at Lamington and Kakadu National Parks and at Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta, through the mist and rain it didn't really live up ... read more

Kangaroo, where are you?: the Atherton Tablelands Friday 23rd January 2009 We’ve been in Australia exactly one month today and we still haven’t seen a Kangaroo! We’ve made our eyes ache looking for them. However, when we zoom in on some of our photos on the computer, we can see some blurry images of small Tree Kangaroos peering at us through the bush on the Atherton Tablelands. Hopefully we’ll get to see some properly in the next few weeks before we leave Australia. We’ve seen some dead ones on the road. We spent a long time stalking quietly through the rainforest yesterday looking for Cassowaries to no avail but we’ll keep looking over the next day or two whilst here on the Cassowary Coast at Mission Beach. On Wednesday we left Port Douglas and headed inland ... read more

We only had one night back in Cairns, which was very interesting with it’s unique hostel entertainment. Our next venture took us inland, until now we had hugged the coast up from Sydney but it was time to see some red and leave the pacific. Sam our tour guide picked us up for the funniest and most entertaining tour to date, we climbed aboard Wally, the bus and off we climbed over the Great Diving Range and onto the Atherton Tablelands. The main road had over 230 corners climbing up over seven hundred metres in only a few Km’s, it was a journey to remember and the views were stunning. The story goes that when the route was first established it was single carriage way with a gate house at each end and three hour ... read more
