Tropical FruitsThe excellent array of quality entertainment on offer at Magnums Hostel, Aurlie Beach
So I've been at this party hostel called Magnums in Airlie Beach for a few days now. It's alright for $16 a night, but the crowning glory of this place is the bedroom action which is lovingly shared among all guests, whether they like it or not. A couple of nights ago, I was in a 10-bed dorm with a mouldy shower sharing with one Irish, one really old American bloke who was a bit too friendly, and a throng of German Highschoolers who were on summer break, whose parents are awaiting their decision on what they will study at university. So naturally its like Spring Break round here (Spring Break - Woo Hoo!) and the hormones are arm wrestling each other. So this one night, a couple of the German kids decided to lose their virginities or something, in the bunk above mine, which was opposite the old bloke's bunk. Sop at 4 am I was robbed of sweet sleep by the sound of 'Ja...Ja...Ja...Nein Nein Nein!!!" coming from above. Jesus fucking christ. Worse, the next day the old bloke (who I found a tad creepy with his misunderstanding of the need for personal space) told me he was awake
and heard it all. So a disturbing night all round. I was moved to a 'Deluxe' cabin the next night, deluxe meaning two less beds, no teenagers, and no mould. Actually that's pretty deluxe.
A cool thing that happened was that on my first day here I was cooking my staple pasta, tuna and tomato pesto in the kitchen (compared to Bellview's, it's shite), I was trying to find the cooker. A guy was eating in the kitchen so I asked him to point it out; so poor is this kitchen that they dont have a cooker, just these two pitiful and burnt to shit mini stoves. As I got to cooking we started chatting as you do; when did you arrive, how long here, where did you come from, etc. Turns out he was staying not only in the same two hostels I stayed at in Cairns and then Townsville, but also at the same times for both, and in the same room in Townsville (as we spoke I recognised him and visa versa. Neither of us rated Townsville or Reef Lodge so we were both walking round not talking to anyone and planning our next bus out)
Goon and CardsThe entertainment of choice on the first night on the T3, Whitsundays. Resulted in the Dive Instructor getting into fisticuffs with one of the younger, skinnier, probably unable to defend himself Germ
... [more]- we realised when he told me about the gross fat guy in speedo's who seemed to have taken up permanent residence at the Reef Lodge in Townsville, adding that he was staying in the same dorm..... but this guy was in my room too...and I recall cringing every time I saw him... so we figured. So me, Carl (the Viking from Norway) and another guy we met round here called Joost, from Holland, formed a little trio and killed a few days here in Airlie (or Munich-On-Sea, whichever). That was fun after being so transient. But today I'm booked on to a ketch boat to cruise the Whitsunday Islands for 3 days, so we may meet up down South; I think we all bought the same 10-day tour so we should all hit Fraser Island at similar times, which would be a blast. I tried for the last few days to get work on a boat instead of paying for the tour, as apparently it's really easy to get cooking work with no experience, and often you get paid too, but no joy whatsoever and the money meter on dorms was ticking so I gave in and booked. ... [more]also have two nights in Hervey Bay, 2 nights campiing and 4x4 safari on Fraser, and two free nights here at Magnums which cover me last night and the night I come back from sailing.
Not so much flora, fauna, or tales of glow in the dark moss to convey from Airlie.... its a pleasant en-route for the Islands, and that's about it.
Townsville didn't have too much to shout about either - its so--called sunday morning market of local produce was rubbisher than a wet weekend in Bracknell and actually, Townsville looks like Bracknell too - but it made a good jumping point to get to Magnetic Island, of which I spent the day on Horseshoe Bay chatting to some sooth-saying birdman who commands the local animals and lives on the beach. Horseshoe Bay was pretty secluded and quiet, a couple of hostels but nothing crazy. Vety nice. Carl only managed to get as far as the ferry terminal on his visit and stayed for one hour, which is an arse because the other side of the island is cute.
Hope Spurs beat Arsenal tonight x dream on ;)
