If yesterday was all about driving then today was…..also all about driving. But it was a more eventual drive than usual. Back to last night. The wind was fair howling after we went to bed. So much so that I got up a few times to add some pegs and remove some somewhat un-required canvas to reduce the damn flapping. Add to that, it was the first night that we separated the two puppies (now five weeks old) for sleeping so when I returned to the tent in the middle of the night, the young fella was keen for a play. We survived! I don’t think it necessary to cast blame about last night’s paranoia! We slept in till 7.30 and packed efficiently and left 9.15. 3 hours to Yuendumu on the Tanami Road. This was part of our longest stretch without fuel stops. We made it easily with a quarter of tank left. It was an interesting town where the young locals were speaking their local languages. The boys got a coffee whilst I got the $195 diesel fill up! We found the turn-off to Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary ( yes I owe the Brooksie and Chris a lottery ticket!) Day 4 cont. bit of a rest at 'The Granites' (another big gold mine nearby) as it is hot and then onward to Refrig. bore another 50km. Arrive there about 9pm - dark but beaut. moonlit night, still red sky - magic - quiet - desert still Find the bore with fence around it -'non drinkable sign' - taste it - yuk - highly salty - but wash my hat in it and it goes dead stiff Well what now, 1/2 L of water left. Have to press on to Renahans bore - another 50k - which i make about the turn of the day - and flop down asleep in a sandy mitre drain -peace and rest. Bloody dingo annoys me during night trying to pinch my gear and making throaty noises - not sure ... read more
