Another day in paradise. Having loved Mataranka Homestead so much we decided to stay another night. David tried to catch a barra but didn't have any success. We spent the morning walking around the camp and springs until it got too warm and we headed off to the thermal pool again. After lunch David again headed off to try and catch a fish with the bloke from the next campsite, no luck again unfortunately, so back to the thermal pool for another swim. We headed down to the bar early tonight to get front row seats for the entertainment. Pete and Kerrie are part of the band Rustflower and are playing here at the Mataranka Homestead during the holidays. We caught part of their show last night and wanted to see it all tonight. They also ... read more

This ended up being a great day ! After filling up at Tennent Creek we set out for either Daly Waters or Katherine, we hadn't really decided which. We saw our first Northern Territory snake on the road today - a very large brown snake which was heading back to the scrub and was luckily not hit by a passing car. We stopped for a cuppa at Renner Springs then stopped again at Dunmarra and made ourselves a sandwich. By this time it was starting to heat up in the ute and the air conditioning wasn't working properly, David thinks we need to have it regassed so hopefully we can find someone in Katherine to do this for us. In the mean time we wind down the windows ! After lots of good reports we decided ... read more

As it’s been so long since our last blog, we’ll split this into two parts. Part 1 – Mt Isa to the NT border BTW - I've put 15 photos on here, so if they don't show, keep scrolling down. They can be enlarged by clicking on them. If you'd like to read Murray and Chris' blog go to: www.travelblog.org/bloggers/kiwoz Our five days off to travel to Gregory Downs and Boodjamulla Lawn Hill NP proved to be a great experience. We travelled north from the Barkly Highway up towards Gregory Downs, pulling off the road down a track to the Gregory River. This river is spring fed so is turquoise, lovely and clear (unlike most Aussie rivers), and the fish swim with you, just out of reach. A visit from a large bull coming down to ... read more

On our 12 month 'OZ Trip' around Australia from June 2008 to 2009, we had only reached as far north as Cooktown in Queensland as we had run out of time to make a worthwhile trip to the tip of Cape York. On the way home to Darwin we had also wanted to travel up through the proposed Limmen National Park, located between Borroloola and Roper Bar in the NT, but two shredded tyres near Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park and Wollogorang made this too risky, so we had travelled back on the tarmac instead. As it turns out, we have been invited to one of Alex's best friend's 40th birthday party being held at their holiday house on Magnetic Island during the July school holidays. So we decided to kill three birds with one stone, ... read more

Hello to all After spending the afternoon and night at Renner Springs...yet another old interesting pub/roadhouse.. was warned on arrival by the park manager to beware of the resident geese.. as the apprently they chase the ladies and childred (so I was in deep trouble) however managed to steer clear. Some travellers informed us that the Gibb River Road maybe closed due to more recent heavy rain. Keeping our fingers crossed..that this won't be the case but will have to wait until we get to Kununurra to check this out. Checked out the Daly Waters Pub...the photos we attach will give you an idea of what it is like very rough but fascinating.. all these old pubs seem to be going the same way. We are now at Mataranka Homestead..just delightful, been for a soak in ... read more

13th October 09 - 14th October 09 Arh, thermal hot springs here I come! During my travels thus far, I have been told that Bitter Springs is a place I just have to go to. And I can see why... it's beautiful! I didn't arrive till around 4pm feeling hot and over being in a van so the warm amazingly clear blue waters of Bitter Springs was just what I was looking for. The water was luke warm and surprisingly refreshing. There was a faint rotten egg smell to the place, but apart from that it was very relaxing. There was a nice group of people to chat to around the Springs and the afternoon pasted by. There is another thermal spring on the other side of town and as it is on the way to ... read more

Day 132 - Daly Waters to Mataranka A big shout out to young Dan Howells who turns 18 today! Happy Birthday Dan, hope you have a great day and well done again on passing your driving test! Everyone was up and about bright and breezy this morning, not a sore head insight. Well, I expect there were a few but they were well hidden! We said our goodbyes to Joyce, Pat and little Kosta and headed out on the highway bound for Mataranka. Another short journey today which would lead us to some Thermal Pools! Thermal Pools? In this weather?! We pass through the small town of Larrimah, another place with important WWII history and one which is quite an interesting stop by all accounts but we push on as we want to try and catch ... read more

When I published my last blog I thought I would not be chatting to you again until we reached far North Queensland, but the places we have visited and the things we have done really do warrant a mention. After leaving Katherine and the beautiful hot springs we travelled on down to Mataranka. This is a small country town with very few amenities but they have two of the most wonderful hot springs you could ever wish to bathe in. We stayed at the Mataranka Caravan park which is adjacent to Bitter Springs and we were told that these springs are both deep and fast flowing which did not bother us too much but when told there was a big python living there we opted for the springs at Elsey Homestead instead, inspiration for the book ... read more
