Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Day 124 - Kings Canyon to Finke River Rest Area via Kathleen Springs The alarm went off at 6.30 this morning and we gleefully ignored it! We’re heading back towards Alice Springs today but we’re travelling with Tony and Jane so there’s no need to leave at the crack of dawn which is a blessing! We haven’t managed to upload the Uluru blogs yet which is a shame, we had internet access there but we were doing so much during the day we just ran out of time to get them uploaded. There’s no Telstra coverage here but they do offer [View Full Entry]

Day 123 - Kings Canyon Another day dawns, another walk to be done! This part of Australia has so many magnificent walks but you do get sore feet after a few days! Nevertheless we packed up our sandwiches in the old rucksack and smiled, smiled, smiled! The ‘Happy Hour’ gang were already up and showered but we were first out of the campsite and the first to arrive at the walking shelter! Not that it’s a race of course but we need a head start on the others because they are bound to catch us up along the way! On arrival [View Full Entry]

Day 122 - Yulara to Kings Canyon Last night we’d introduced ourselves to the new family camped behind us, well more accurately we’d complemented them on their dog which sort of started the conversation. The German Shepherd was beautiful and it turned out that she was a fully trained assistance dog for the young lady owner who was travelling with her family. We chatted for a while and then left them to the rest of their evening. We heard them outside for a short time and then as the night progressed things went quiet. Then morning arrived, well, I say morning [View Full Entry]

Day 11 9/8/2009 Ayres Rock to Kings Canyon Left mid morning heading to Kings Canyon. Easy drive today as the road was tar all the way and stopping at Curtin Springs for fuel and lunch under the trees again. Fuel $1.70 per litre. From there we turned off and headed north on Luritja Road to Kings Canyon. We called into Kings Creek Station which is a cattle station offering services similar to Curtin Springs but on a bigger scale - Fuel, accommodation, meals, souvenirs and camel, quad bike or helicopter rides. Very neat and tidy and staff very friendly. From there [View Full Entry]

So, 4:30am, very dark, reasonably cold, and very sleepy, we all got up for breakfast. The hand powered lights didn't give off much in the way of illumination, so finding all your belongings in the tent was tricky at such a time. Then we packed up the bus, jumped aboard and set off for kings canyon, about 45 mins away. When we arrived it was still quite dark, although sunrise was only a few minutes away so we could see enough to walk. We walked up the start of two walks - one would take 3.5 hours and the other about [View Full Entry]

Day 53 (Friday 12/06/09, NJJ) Up at 5.30am. Very cold. Picked up at 6.20am for The Rock tour. Everyone on the bus (21) had to take it in turns to sit at the front and introduce ourselves - embarrassing at first. Around midday we arrived at Kings Canyon for a walk - over 6km and took about 3.5 hours. It was hot even though it's winter but I think we're definitely doing it at the right time of year, summer would be way too hot. About 5pm we stopped at the roadside to collect firewood, this involved knocking down and breaking [View Full Entry]

Us at King's Canyon

Kevin and I were both so excited to finally be going on our Outback adventure! The Outback is just so quintessentially Australian, and no trip to Oz would be complete without a trip into the Red Centre. So, we booked a three-day, two-night trip called “The Rock Tour”. Day 1: We were picked up outside our hostel bright and early, 6am! Our tour guide was a really nice guy named Greg, and he picked us up in a 22-seater van. After picking up the rest of our group, we began the long drive to King’s Canyon. Our group kept occupied during [View Full Entry]

Drive

Shoes

Entry by Rich Wednesday 17/12/08 We had a bit of a lie in on Wednesday as we only had to get up at 4.30. The reason for the early starts is the heat. To complete this morning's walk around King's Canyon takes just over three hours and there isn't much shade. With temperatures reaching 40 degrees by 9 a.m it would be too hot to comfortably complete the walk. After a short drive from the campsite to King's Canyon we set out on the walk at 6 a.m. The first half hour or so is the only really demanding stretch with [View Full Entry]

Left at 6am and drove to the Canyon, for a 3 1/2 hour walk. It is very steep to start off with but then it is a wonderfull walk the rest of the way... Got to the top and the views were amazing! Could see for miles... The rock formations are amazing, they are layers of rock in different angles, these are layers of [View Full Entry]
