Monday 11 June 2007 Culture shock culture shock culture shock - we’ve arrived at Tennant Creek to be greeted by ‘Neville’ a local Aboriginal guy who took a liking to Matt and Lily straight away. We headed into the grocery store (which had huge iron bars protecting it), bought our food and came out to see our car and van still there and no-one sitting on either of them asking us to buy them beers (apparently this can be a common occurrence). We stayed the night at the Outback Caravan Park and decided to treat ourselves to a $3 show. Jimmy (the bush tucker man) Hooker was a bush poet who was going to recite a few poems for us and show us some bush tucker that we could taste………..that is until we were 10 ... read more

Current Mood: Hot springs with Crocodiles...... EEEEEEEEEErrry! Well as ever I came to town for a great break but had to return to the island for yet another 9 days of work saying my final good byes to Shell as she had plans to leave for the east coast. The excitement of next break was for many reasons….. Bass in the grass came to town which was to be a Scream, Bretta had finally landed a gig on the island working for the same department as me and I had been invited on a Camping trip that would hit two locations. All to be explained in full……… as I always do hehehe x So out on the island I was running the drill of digging rock for holes that would be used in Dunnart trapping doing ... read more

When we were at Tamworth earlier in the year we met this solo lady traveller named Dee, now she helped us with a few things that only a genuine nice person would. It wasnt anything but time that she gave us but she gave it freely. We vowed to meet up some 4000 kilometres later at a place where she had been helping out. Enter Daly Waters Pub! We dont wish to sound negative but the place is a Tourist stop, if you want to see a real outback pub go to Adelaide river Inn. The Daly Waters Pub ( DWP ) do a Barra and Beef night every night, for $18.50 . For that you get a 7.00 steak and salad available at any hotel bistro anywhere , the whole place was trying too hard ... read more

There was a noticable air of tension in the camp this morning as we all breakfasted in the chill, but the mood thawed during the first few kms thanks to The Rizla Game, which each Greg joined in, laughing and shouting - to our relief. It was a long days drive. My bum ached continually and the old, cramped bus was made worse when I offered one of my 2 seats to Suze, who'd moved from the front seat to escape Greg's naff come-ons. We had a fantastic sunset stop off at Devils Marbles - a huge playground of rocks for adults - climbing and clambering over the fantastic landscape. Things were smoothing themselves out, or so we thought, as we settled down to that night's camp for a game of cards and a few beers. ... read more

The events last night....hillarious: We arrived about 8pm in Daly Waters, (my second time here due to my previous Cairns-Darwin trip's detour due to flooding ...i'm a local!), set up camp and sorted out tea; a beef pot noodle with chunks of corned beef mashed in - delicious - yes, we'd managed to buy some food from a local mini mart. Several jugs of beer later, there's a commotion outside and I rush out to see a good old fashioned Aussie punch-up taking place. First there's just 2 guys, then 4 and there's punches being thrown left right and centre, shouts of "Who the bloody hell are you!?" and all sorts...it was wicked, well, until one of the locals turned up with a baseball bat.... Anyhoo, the night was progressing along nicely, we were all pretty ... read more

After checking out of the hostel early this morning we began the 695km journey south from Katherine to Tenant Creek, and arduous, boring and somewhat tedious journey through scenery of nothingness broken only by a short pit stop at the "Historic Pub" in Daly Waters. Quite why the pub is historic is anyone's guess but many travellers who have stopped here before us have left small momentos of the trip stappled, superglued and blutacked to the walls and every available space in the pub, including, banknotes, bra's, boxer shorts, flags, beer mats, license plates and anything else that they deemed of inconsequential personal value. With us being tight and less than interested in stapling legal tender or our boxer shorts to the bar we sat for a cold drink before taking photos and continuing the journey ... read more

Day 1~It was another early start this morning which was even harder as we were all suffering from last nights party games!! We spent a good few hours travelling until we stopped for some lunch at the nearest and only town...Daly Waters which has a population of about 10 people!! It also is home to the first pub in Australia and the worlds most remote traffic lights! Day 2~We travelled even further south down to Devils Marbles which looked really incredible...you don't see anything for miles and miles and then all of sudden there our these huge boulders in the middle of no where! We spent a few hours walking around them and looking at the different formations and aboriginal art which was really interesting! ... read more

Where salt water crocodiles start living well furthest point south they are! So when crossing a river to get there at night and then realising that the next day we were a little perturbed to say the least. The place is tiny and yes in rainy season a river crosses road.... the pub is covered in memorable items like notes from around the world and photo ID of people that have visited here. We spent a few minutes looking around outside before entering Daly Waters to turn out car lights and wonder around in dark looking at stars. If I say that the sky in Britain will feel like its falling down on me when get home I won't be lying. With no buildings the sky here covers the whole hemisphere and is covered with more ... read more

May 24, Sunday. I took a quick look around the town of Tenant Creek this morning. Found an old mineshaft just on the outskirts of town. I ventured into the entrance and walked along the dark passage until I saw daylight ahead. The roof of the mine had collapsed and a large hole in the roof allowed the morning sun to shine in. I was surprised to be greeted by a couple of young blokes that had camped there overnight. One of them was eager to show me some small bats that were roosting on the roof. Later that morning I took a track about 5 kilometres off the main highway where I found the Devils Pebbles, which is a feature similar to the Devils Marbles, smaller but just as impressive. I arrived in Daily Waters ... read more
