Day two of our trip up to Darwin did, as our guides had warned, contain a lot of time sitting in the bus watching the landscape slowly change from dry scrub into green tropical vegetation. Our first stop came mid morning when we arrived at Newcastle Waters, a huge but now deserted cattle station that used to be an important meeting point for drovers crossing the outback during the early settlement days. In the 1800 and early 1900s, farmers in Australia employed cattle drovers to take animals over vast distances to sell at market, deliver them to new owners or simply find better sources of food and water during droughts. These drovers would move hundreds, sometimes thousands of cows or sheep huge distances and Newcastle Waters, being fairly central, happened to be a convenient place for ... read more

Day 131 - Banka Banka to Daly Waters Waking up early is easy when the birds start the dawn chorus, being bothered to get out of bed is a whole other story but we did manage to crawl out just after 7! The showers were wet and warm and after packing up we were on the road again by 8.30. We could hear the Daly Waters pub swimming pool calling us! Today’s trip was only 4 hours, nice and easy does it! There was little traffic on the Stuart Highway but we waved to anything on coming just for something to do! Darryl was videoing some of the route and happened to say how good it would be to see an eagle or any living wildlife and then flying along side us was a Little Eagle. ... read more

23-7-09 On the road again to Pine Creek, only an hour away, we decided to stay at Miners Park no 101 NT in free Camps book . Well what an adventure, we followed what we thought were the directions & got onto a dirt rd, we were supposed to go 3 k’s but we could not turn around, we went 10 k’s & said OK we are just going to do it. Den had to do a 10 point turn & we filled up the back legs of the caravan with dirt scraping the van in & out of the rubble. I will give it to Den he can back a caravan. We did not do any damage & we did not end up in a ditch . The road was so rough that we were ... read more

DAY 265 It feels cool this morning, I can hear people already moving around outside, the light is not even breaking through, we are nice and cosy within the confines of our sleeping bags so getting up is not an option. At about 7.30 the sun is barely shedding a warm glow, we decide to get up and get packed up. Andy is out and the kettle is on, I am tidying the bed up and emptying the contents of the tent ready for folding away. The only thing I leave in the tent is the toaster to get our breakfast ready. Once we are breakfasted, we pack up, Molly wanders past to say goodbye, she leaves us with her details to contact her if we are happen to be passing her in Tasmania. One of ... read more

18/7/09 WE are off to Daly Waters Pub today, heard mixed reviews on it , so will make up our own mind. We went through Renner Springs & had a cuppa at Elliot & heard that there had been two vans that had collided just past Renner Springs, no one hurt so that was lucky , but one car turned over & was on its roof, We pushed on & arrived at Daly Waters Pub just after lunch. We loved it , so we decided to stay, $20 for a powered site. The atmosphere was great, bra’s, nickers, hats & all sorts of things hanging off the ceiling & walls . We booked in for a Beef & Barra Tea at 7pm, a real treat . In the avo we had a couple of drinks & ... read more

Well we finally said goodbye to Darwin and the humidity which was a bit hard to take and made our way down to Katherine which of course is famous for its gorges and the Katherine River. It is also a stopping or starting place for the famous Ghan train and we were lucky enough to see it getting ready to depart for Adelaide on one of the days we were there. It was very impressive with an enormous amount of carriages.Of course we all decided there and then that we may have to consider a trip on her before we get too old.So that is something else to add to the bucket list.we stayed at the Riverview caravan Park which was very nice just outside of town and very near the other great attraction ,the hot springs.Of course ... read more

It’s pretty hard to get worked up about a place that even its own tourist brochures describe as ‘desolate’. At least you know in the Northern Territory, they pull no punches. This is typical of the straight-talking Territorians, rough-as-guts hard-working types who drink Piss and shit in the outdoor dunny. Even most of the women round here look like the kind of blokes who’d have to fly-in a wife from the Philippines. Some of em probably do. There’s only two places visitors generally head for in the Territory, Ayer’s Rock (some of you may remember it from my last blog. Nice place. You really should go!) and Kakadu National Park. Unfortunately both Debbie and I had independently visited them both in our previous lives as backpackers, and were keen to motor on to pastures new, so ... read more

Last night we stopped off at the Devils Marbles again and Samuel spent the afternoon riding his bike . He can officially ride without training wheels hipeeee!!!!!! We arrived a Daly Waters to check out the famous Pub. It was a unique place with everything you could imagine hanging from the walls around the bar. There was Frank the chookman to entertain us that night. He told some great Aussie jokes and sang some funny songs with a wedge tailed eagle on his head AKA a black chook. This was another monumental moment for Samuel as he lost his tooth and he was told that the tooth fairy doesn’t come to the NT because it is too far to fly so they have a Bush Fairy instead, it is the same as the tooth fairy except ... read more
