Last night I forgot to record the sights that we saw during dinner last night in the Italian restaurant. Bernie was looking over my shoulder at a woman with eyelashes that he kept telling me looked like bannister brushes on her eyelids. I had to wait until we left, so as not to look conspicuous checking them out, but I have to agree with Bernie that her eyelashes were ridiculously HUGE! I, on the other hand, was looking over Bernie’s shoulder straight at a guy whose shirt had ridden up and trousers ridden down to reveal the band of his underwear and his bum crack! Some things you just cannot un-see, ha, ha, ha. This morning we went in search of the Big Golden Guitar despite the fact that we already photographed it when we drove ... read more

It was just as well we took our photos of Mount Panorama yesterday afternoon because this morning it was foggy. Not to mention that the temperature fell to -2°C overnight. Brrr, it was cold! After re-packing the truck we headed into town to visit the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum. Housed in the old public school buildings that date to 1874 the museum permanently houses the fossils and minerals collected by Warren Somerville AM. After spending a lifetime amassing the collection he donated it to the museum in 2002 so that it could be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Now I am quite familiar with the Melbourne Museum’s Dynamic Earth Gallery and I have to say that the collection here in Bathurst is as good or better than that. Not bad for a regional museum! ... read more

This morning we were back on the road just after 9.00am heading for Bathurst. With our watches encouraging us to stand and move for a minute every hour we have been trying to factor in a leg stretch after we have been driving for an hour. We had been aiming to make our first stop at Cootamundra, but when we spotted the sign for the Bethungra Rail Spiral viewing platform we thought, why not check something out while we stretch our legs?! The heritage-listed Bethungra Rail Spiral was built in the 1940s to address a bottleneck on the main rail route between Sydney and Melbourne and is one of Australia's most significant rail engineering feats of its time. Listed as historically and scientifically rare, the spiral is of great historical significance due to the ambition and ... read more

This morning we travelled ten kilometres east on the Sturt Highway to Forest Hill to start today’s sightseeing at the RAAF Wagga Aviation Heritage Centre that is housed in the old Guard House at the entrance to the RAAF Base Wagga (even though, technically, it is at Forest Hill). Before heading into the guard house to view the smaller exhibits we wandered around the well-preserved aircraft outside. The heritage centre is home to an F-111, a Mirage, a Korean War Meteor and a Vietnam War Canberra. Also located outdoors is a memorial to the Empire Air Training Scheme which saw thousands of aircrew trained to contribute to the WWII war effort. More than 200 training bases were constructed throughout the Empire, with 27 in Australia and nine across the the Riverina and surrounding districts. Mural artist, ... read more

Finally … we were able to head off today on our long-planned road trip to NSW. Since our trip in 2019 we have been planning to head north again to explore more of what NSW has to offer. We were all set to go in mid-2021, just after Bernie retired, but then Victoria was locked down AGAIN and we had to stay at home instead. Then we planned to head north early last year, but there were once in a hundred year floods throughout NSW so we drove west to South Australia instead. Our patience has paid off and we now have the truck packed for our NSW adventure. Speaking of the truck (aka the ISUZU MU-X) Bernie is very keen to try out all of the modifications and accessories he has been organising for it. ... read more

Left hotel just after 5.30am. The hotel had given us packed breakfasts which we ate on the way to the airport. They had to put my big bag and Peter's big bag on the roof rack. Initially they put one of the small bags in between and they only used one rope across so that it was easy to imagine the small bag flying off as we sped along. We told them to bring it down and put it inside. We made it to the airport with all our luggage intact fortunately. Because of earlier experience flying to Varanasi, we knew that we would have to remove all electronics or anything hard from our bags, so we got through security with minimal fuss this time. We had 800INR left and ended up buying some more ... read more

The first leg is Gold Coast to Sydney for an overnight stay at Sydney Park Hotel in Newtown, an inner city suburb with a fabulous feel. To get the trip underway, the Francis St Cocktail Lounge Apprentice tried out the pub hotel’s speciality cocktail, the Pirate Paradise - well mixed, easy drinking. Walking along King St, one of the main drags, I came across a lovely cosy bar, She Loves You, and tested their signature Dark Rum Daiquiri – very easy drinking. With a morning flight departure & a recommendation from the bartender to check out Sydney Park before departing to see how many of the ‘Big 5’ I spot – turtle, eel, fox, pelican & spoonbill –, I reluctantly head for bed. Only to wake up in the night and discover my phone’s frozen in ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Eden April 29th 2023

In 1797 George Bass and Matthew Flinders surveyed the bay at Eden for the first time, which is one the deepest natural harbours in the world. The first whaling station, for shore whaling, was established in the area by John Raine in 1828. Initially the prevalent orcas were seen by the whalers as a nuisance, however, the Yuin aboriginals employed on the boat crews refused to kill orcas, and a new policy encouraged collaboration between whalers and the killer whales. The killer whales would trap humpback whales that entered Twofold Bay, the whales would then be harpooned, and the orcas rewarded with the tongue and lips of the humpback carcasses. The whales would then be hauled ashore, their blubber cut up and boiled to extract oil. Whales were a valuable commodity for colonial NSW, with an ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Bermagui April 26th 2023

We wanted to again visit Bermagui on our trek southwards, as we can never get enough of this picturesque south coast town. Our caravan park overlooks the ocean and is just a short walk to the local shops containing many fine cafes and eateries, including our favourite vegetarian restaurant, "Boneless". The nearby Fisherman's Wharf has the best fish and chips you will ever eat, along with The Gelati Clinic, who produce their own unique flavours of gelati. Our first goal was to climb the stairs down the cliff face to the Blue Pool for a swim. The Blue Pool is a natural rock pool that was expanded to it’s current 50 metre length in 1937, and is probably the best of the more than 100 ocean fed rock pools that line the coast of NSW. The ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Narooma April 22nd 2023

The name Narooma is said to be derived from a word in the local Yuin Aboriginal dialect meaning "clear blue waters", and it certainly lives up to its name. A township was surveyed at the present location of Narooma in 1883 and given the name Noorooma, which it held until 1972. It was declared a port in 1884. We were initially disappointed with the location of our Discovery Caravan Park out of town heading south, however, a short walk through the park to Handkerchief Beach put paid to any disappointment. The beach was clean, the water was clear and blue, there were hardly any people on the beach and at the right hand end of the beach was a tidal creek running from Nangudga Lake. Eurobodalla Shire Council and NPWS have done an excellent job with ... read more
