Wednesday: Geoff Udy arrived last night into Glen Innes having ridden from Toowoomba to join us. Unfortunately his wallet had fallen out of his open pocket on the way. This morning Geoff and Bryan embarked on a needle in a haystack ride to Tenterfield to try & find the wallet while Keith, Brenton & I went 40kms up the New England Highway to Deepwater for coffee & gas to wait for them to complete their search Geoff & Bryan were unsuccessful in their wallet search and soon returned to meet us. We then retraced our route 17kms to Dundee (NSW not Scotland) & turned East into Bald knob Road which led to The Old Grafton Rd. This had around 100kms of everything an adventure rider could wish for. Fords, mud, slippery seal & gravel, fantastic scenery ... read more

Monday: Left Tambo early after a café breakfast. Heading South East on a single lane sealed road our route took us off this after 5kms and onto an even narrower sealed road for a further 10kms before we were soon onto a gravel “road”. The road, as usual varied from hard-packed to slippery from all the rain. Red dirt/clay seems the worst when wet & is like riding on ice. Some pretty long straights on this road. We continued on this route seeing some interesting wildlife. Two flocks of Emus (or maybe Cassowaries) which generally run alongside the road & away from the noise of the bikes. Plenty of brightly coloured birds (Pink & Grey) not sure if they are Rosellas or Cockatoos. Once again plenty of Kangaroos ready to play chicken, but as long as ... read more

Following our hikes in the Warrumbungles, our muscles were aching and we looked forward to the hot artesian springs of Moree to recuperate. Gwydir Caravan Park did not disappoint, with five thermal pools ranging from 28 degrees through to 39 degrees celsius, all with reputed healing qualities. The bore feeding the pools taps into the Great Artesian Basin, and reaches down some 953 metres. The water contains many key minerals good for the body, including sodium carbonate, magnesium, sulphate, calcium, iron, alumina, silica ammonias and nitrates. Although it was raining a good deal of the time we stayed in Moree, it did not affect us as we were happy just to relax and soak in the thermal pools. Moree is surrounded by endless flat plains of rich back soils, which grows cotton, pecans and olives in ... read more

The small town of Coonabarabran was where we based ourselves to tackle the Warrumbungles, a volcanic mountain range which lies within a National Park. Plugs, dykes and domes are common volcanic features within the park. The area is also a dedicated Night Sky Park, hosting the renowned Siding Springs Observatory, and we visited an outdoor astronomy park on our first night to see the stars. Donna the Astronomer was our host, and the stargazing session was very informative. The next day we thought we would tackle an easy walk to Fanny's Lookout, but it proved anything but easy. One thousand stairs up to the lookout and our legs were burning, but the view was worth it. The next day we did the Grand High Tops walk, which climbed above the famous Bread Knife. This was a ... read more

We have always driven past Mudgee on our way home, and it was time to savour the delights of this central west town. Mudgee lies in a picturesque valley and has a well deserved reputation for tourism and boasts many wineries and fine eating venues. Coal mining has brought a good deal of wealth to the town. The town is very clean and many of the old buildings have been preserved in the main streets. We spent a week in Mudgee, driving to Castle Rocks, Hands on Rock, The Drip and the historic town of Hill End. We also visited many of the local cafes. Being May, it was quite cold overnight.... read more

I completed the MS Gong Ride from Sydney to Wollongong in November 2019, although I was quite unwell at the time. One week later I checked myself into Hospital, and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, with a tumour the size of a large mango in my lower back. After six months of intense chemotherapy, CT Scans showed the chemotherapy had eliminated the cancer from my body. Two years later I remain in remission, despite my Oncologist advising that only 10% of patients with my type of Lymphoma make it to two years post chemo without relapsing. Nothing short of a miracle. We are grateful for the many prayers offered on our behalf. Kim and I commenced our Big Lap from our home town of Wellington NSW, where we both grew up ... read more

Mungo Lake is just one of the Willandra Lakes system that around the time of the last ice age received water from the Lachlan River. The Willandra Lakes was one of the first places in Australia to receive UNESCO World Heritage Status. The whole region covers 240,000 hectares and includes much of Mungo National Park which is the main tourist destination for visitors to the area. Mungo Lake’s claim to fame in its own right is as the home of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man. The cremated remains of Mungo Lady were discovered first and is the first recorded human cremation. Mungo Man was buried and his remains were discovered a couple of years later. Their remains are the oldest found in Australia and amongst the oldest in the world. Their discovery provided evidence that human ... read more

This morning we packed the car for the second last time before we pack up for the big drive home on Wednesday. First stop, the General Store to buy another cask of water and some food in case we need it for lunch. Food and water sorted we popped along to Menindee Auto Repairs to see if we might be able to organise a replacement bolt for the LED strip light that is currently gaffer taped on at one end. The helpful mechanic engineered a bolt for us (he cut it shorter!), fitted it and checked that the other bolt is nice and tight and provided us with the sage advice that the tightness of the bolts should be checked periodically because dirt road driving will loosen the nuts!! All that for $10.00. We set off ... read more

This morning we headed off into the Kinchega National Park. Such a drama buying park passes in NSW! We did try to buy one online as we did (easily) for South Australia, but they wanted us to submit a copy of our vehicle registration showing our home address and a copy of Bernie’s Seniors card. Well, gee whiz, we didn’t think to bring the vehicle registration documentation with us!! Today at the park we need to pay $8.00 for a day pass in actual cash money, put it in an envelope and post it into a slot. How archaic. Fortunately we managed to scratch together $16.00 worth of change to make both vehicles legal should we be stopped by a ranger. We started with the River Drive now at least partially reopened after the rain last ... read more
