First just let me say, Happy Friday! I'm always happy that it's Friday but today makes it even more exciting because it is the start to our first "full weekend" in Australia. It also completes our first week at pre school.
Today at preschool was even better! I must say, the people we work with are great and easy to get along with! I'm happy about this because it makes the "Chaos" of the pre school better. This is true in any work setting--if you have good co workers your day will be THAT much better.
A cute story worth reading--It is the Queen of Englands birthday today, and so, in honor of that today at pre school we had a party for the queen. The children made crowns, invitations, and even decorations. The children also dressed up in dresses and were eager to "meet the queen of England." We were hopeing to get another employee to dress up as the queen but no one wanted too (ahem, Kelly.) So, we had to tell the children that the Queen was too busy and her flight was delayed. The children were very bummed and said "That's rubbish."
I am
wall
Our Get to Know Us Wall picking up on new Australian slang each day. Lastnight, Kaylee (the granddaughter of the homestay family who lives here) mentioned the word "texta." Being an American, I was caught off guard by this, and assumed it meant something along the lines of texting on a phone. Turns our, "texta" is the common word used for a marker. Today in pre school the children were coloring their queens crowns and asked "Sarah will you please pass me the textas?" and I must admit, I was very exicited that I KNEW what this Australian word meant. It affirms that I am becoming familiar with the culture around here.
As I noted in my blog yesterday, it's common for Australians to walk around barefoot. Well, keep reading if you want to be even more shocked. A teacher at my center today said that he didn't OWN a pair of shoes untill he was in year 5 (5th grade.) He walked barefoot nearly all of his childhood. What a strange thing to hear!
Our host Mum suprised Kelly and I with a gift tonight. The gift was a stuffed Koala bear (This means my eyes are peeled even MORE for a real
Nutri Grain
Aussie cereal koala bear now) and a 4 pack of Australian Children's books. The books in the pack are......
The Lamington Man (Lamington is a common Australian dessert. It's a lemon sponge cake)
The Kangaroos Gruff
Goldilocks and the Three Koalas
The Wheels on the Ute (Ute is a bus)
I can't wait to read these books to my Australian kiddos here, and share them back home with American kiddos!
(I know I talk about food a lot in my blog...but that's a good thing isn't it?)....Right, now, I am sitting down chomping on some yummy Australian ceral called "Nutri-grain." No, it's not the nutri gran bar brand back home. It's a whole wheat taste however, and I am told many athletes eat it. We eat it nearly every morning for breakfast along with peanut butter toast. (I'm starting to miss my spinach omlettes that I make for breakfast back home a LOT but I love trying all these new tastes down unda!)
Keep on doing that sunshine dance for our Byron Bay weekend! Love you and miss everyone!
