Happy 2013 everyone
We hope you had a great Christmas & New Year.
Just a quickie (I promise) to wish everyone a great 2013 and give a quick taste of what we got up to over the festive period.
We were lucky enough to get a house and pet sit by Bondi beach over Chrimbo. A great location and we were tasked with looking after two bunnies & three guinea pigs. Not much hassle you would think but these bunnies didn't get on. They'd had several fights during 'bunny dating' and Lola had a damaged leg. This meant that we ended up giving her injections everyday and working with Ari (the vet) to change her bandages. We never thought bunnies were that violent but we woke one morning to find clumps of fur all over the balcony! Thankfully the injury happened before we arrived cos the bills were racking up!
The guinea pigs were easy, if a little smelly, and used to run away and squeak when we tried to stroke them.
The weeks were spent exploring Sydney, swimming in the pool and hitting the beach. All pretty relaxing and a nice change from our recent touring.
The weather
has been up and down. Christmas Day was cool and rainy, so our trip to Bondi beach to do the touristy thing was a little curtailed. Still the rain stopped for a bit for F to get her Christmas dip in the sea.
We had been joined for the day by our friend Emma, who we met through BasOp and is now living in Sydney. It was great to meet up with her with so many of our friends and family (you) far away.
We'd been to church in the morning and then opened our presents (didn't take long!). Though I had muted the idea to F of not buying presents because you realise how commercialised the season is here. Needless to say my 'desire' to experience the true meaning of Christmas wasn't well received! We had a great time all the same.
We've done the touristy stuff (see pics), but it has been pretty relaxed. We saw the start of the Sydney to Hobart boat race and have been checking out the Sydney Festival. The main thing of course was the fireworks at New Year by the harbour. We had built it up to be the most spectacular fireworks
Catching up with our friend Emma
Emma is now living in Sydney. We met up at the Carols by Candlelight concert at The Domain. It made us feel Christmassy which helps when it is 30 degrees display we would ever see. Whilst it was great to celebrate the New Year in warmth and with friends, it didn't quite live up to that expectation. A semi-drunk F even holds that the Lake Meadows display was better!
The new year has seen the heat increase, rising above forty degrees! Some wildfires have been raging but we've stayed cool by hitting the pool and the cinema (FYI Life of Pi 3D & Les Miserables are FAB). Our latest petsit has enabled us to hit the Wii (though F didn't appreciate the WiiFit game stating she was 54! Ha, it also said 26 and 30 so clearly more apt! - F). Though she should count herself lucky she has a roof over her head after asking if the homeowners kids were their grandchildren!
Anyway this is it. Tickets are finally booked for NZ so the next time you should hear from us we'll be there. We haven't done much in Sydney (I was thinking of going to a cricket Test match but tickets were $140!). Perhaps we're a little travel weary and keen to get on with 'real' life. There is only so much travelling you can do before you
get 'bored' or kill each other! Perhaps NZ will respark things a little?
I don't think this is goodbye to Australia, I've made a few connections here that might lead to something, so we'll see. If it is our last time here we want to say how great it has been to meet some fantastic people and thank them for their hospitality, friendship & love.
Thank you for reading the blogs in 2012 and we hope you enjoy the 2013 batch.
Enjoy & we'll see you in New Zealand, first stop Christchurch.
