After loads of looking around at potential new homes for us to live in, loads of open days and viewings of units around the northern beaches of Sydney, putting in long winded and detailed tenancy applications etc, we finally got one. And it was the best of the lot.
Right ON Narrabeen beach, and with views looking south down to Collaroy beach and Long Reef Headland, we moved in to the Marquesas building on Monday, 21 July. Very exciting!!!
The removalists brought all my stuff from my last Narrabeen unit which had been in storage for the last three years over to our new place and all of it except the (massive, long) couch would fit up the stairs or inthe lift. The couch ended up coming up five floors, hauled up the outside of the building, in full view of most of Narrabeen and all the traffic on Pittwater Road. Lucky we didn’t cause any accidents of drivers by because it looked really, really dodgy. That massive thing was swinging around in high winds and nearly went through a few people’s windows on the levels below us. At one stage the two guys up on our balcony hauling it
up almost dropped it because it was so heavy and swinging about. After that the whole thing got stuck on the railing of the balcony below and James had to go down and knock on their door, climb out on their balcony edge, reach out to the couch (still swinging) and unhook the strap while holding on to nothing except the swinging couch.
Oh, and before all this they made me sign a handwritten statement accepting all blame, responsibility and costs if anything happened.
To my GREAT relief we got it up and over our balcony in one piece. I say “we” because at the end there was me, James, Gowz and the two removalist men on the end of the rope heaving it up.. scary, scary, scary... very bloody scary.
The rest of the moving process has been fine. We did a trip up to Port Macquarie in a 3-tonne hire truck from Hertz where I had another full storage unit full of stuff which wouldn’t fit in our new flat. Most of that is still down in our garage in the basement waiting for a new home. Those two days were the wettest days we’ve
had here yet - great driving weather, not.
The views from our unit are simply amazing. Being up so high we have a great vantage point south right down the beach and can always see things going on. We can see out to see and all along the beach and shoreline. In the other direction we look west and over Narrabeen Lakes. That’s where we see some amazing sunsets over the water and bushland. If we look directly down we can see the intersection of Pittwater Road and Ocean Street and that’s good for checking out lots of cool kombis which drive past regularly. Oh, and we also look down onto the local fire station next door. Not that I have looked or anything but every other day the firies go out the back in their sleeveless vests and wash the trucks....
We’ve watched some awesome storms roll in.. sitting up on our bed and looking at the black clouds and streaks of rain come closer and closer across the valley to our buildings and the sea. Coooool. My dad calls the massive window in our living room a ‘great time waster’ and he’s right. We are always
walking up to it and just staring out.... we are going to be very happy here.
When we talked to people on our South America trip about moving to Australia after the trip, and what we would be doing, we always said we wanted to live right on the beach, overlooking the waves, in a really beautiful place where we could make the most of the great outdoors and a relaxed, wholesome, healthy lifestyle. And that is exactly what we have created for ourselves... check out the pics.
