Couple brilliant days. Thursday, Kenji and I went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which we've been refering to as Harry Pothead and his huge bong for some reason. It was pretty good, very entertaining, but I was disappointed that so much from the book was left out. I guess though, that the more complex the themes get on paper, the more difficult it is to
a) fit it into a 2.5hr film and
b) fit it into a 2.5hr film.
then we were going to get cupcakes at the Cupcake on Pitt store (speaking of Pitt, Kenji's new years resolution is to get a body like Brad. Anyone else want to claim this one too?) but since we'd had about two big bags of candy and chocolate, the sugar level was disasterously high already. So we settled for nachos. Yum. Then yesterday which was my roommate in Toronto, Roopa's birthday! I went into Glebe for a long brunch at Envy, then walked around a bit, went up to Hyde Park...
met up with Kenji for dinner at Darling Harbour. It was so sweet - he had planned on taking me on the Bridge Climb but since I only have sandals here, we had to think of alternate plans. So we ate at I'm Angus Steakhouse... I had snapper, and we shared calamari and grilled bread. One drink to set us on the way, and then walked over to George St to meet up with Kenji's old roommate Gareth - the one who supplied that lethal Russian vodka the last time we all hung out. We had a drink in Star Bar, then more at Pavilion, then went over to Pontoon in Darling Harbour. Gareth said that we all had to talk to at least one new person that night, so I left the boys to woo the girls and came back about 20 minutes later to tell them I'd spoken to 5 new people. People were friendly in pontoon last night! haha...
Saw these two guys who were deep in conversation and so I smiled at them and next thing I know they're telling me that I have a fabulous smile and look like an interesting person. So Christian and James, their names were, we chatted. Very fun, very worldly guys with great senses of humor. It turned out that James' cousin had a boat moored out on the dock and invited me aboard for a drink. So I went, leaving Kenji in Gareth's faithful hands, and it was absolutely beautiful aboard the boat. We were on the top deak with wine, still night, people everywhere - milling around... music going.. it didn't hurt that these two guys were very good looking! James bailed after awhile and Christian and I stayed up talking until 4:30am, and I got home around 5am. It was one of those nights that was so perfect... we talked about it and we're not going to stay in touch because realistically, why drag it out? We both have personal reasons why we wouldn't get more involved than we did and it was refreshing that someone would be so honest.
Then my parents arrived this morning and I went to meet them for breakfast. We went to Bills in Surry Hills for eggs and thick toast - so good! Then all three of us took much needed naps before going up to the Rocks for dinner at Ocean Room, and then to see Showstoppers at the Opera House. It was FABULOUS. These five exceptional vocal artists performed all sorts of Broadway hits - from Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Singin' in the Rain, My Fair Lady, Gypsy, the list goes on... absolutely amazing. Then one of the encores they sang I Still Call Australia Home..
I've been to cities that never close down
From New York to Rio and old London town
But no matter how far
Or how wide I roam
I still call Australia home
I'm always travelin'
And I love bein' free
So I keep leavin' the sun and the sea
But my heart lies waiting over the foam
I still call Australia home
All the sons and daughters spinning 'round the world
Away from their families and friends
Ah, but as the world gets older and colder
It's good to know where your journey ends
And someday we'll all be together once more
When all the ships come back to the shore
Then I realize something I've always known
I still call Australia home
No matter how far
Or how wide I roam
I still call Australia home
Tomorrow we're off to the Blue Mountains for about three days. It's gonna be so fun! Roadtrip! Am enjoying my last days here to the max.
Ciao ciao
